As we’ve said before, there will be a lot of fun and exciting things to do at the New York State Fair, and we’re very close to the grand opening. But with so many activities to chose from, it can be hard to know exactly what you want to see. With only one week until opening day of the Great New York State Fair, we have decided to narrow down your categories a bit. Do you want to see and interact with some cool science? Well if so, here are some of the great science exhibits that are part of the SUNY showcases you can see this year at the fair.
AUGUST 27
Jefferson Community College will showcase its Zoo Technology Program with a picture board of Zoo Technology student activities and a small collection of animal work tools and biofacts (e.g., giraffe skull). Visitors will be engaged with opportunities to examine the items, ask questions and some could be demonstrated or tried (e.g., kids could try using a snake hook on a toy snake).
AUGUST 29 & 30
Alfred State will exhibit a small mobile robot that visitors can operate. It has been used in high school technology challenges at the college. Automated and advanced manufacturing is also taught at the college. Manufacturers are in need of engineers and technicians in this area. The college will also bring a variety of small renewable energy items that will allow visitors to experience how PV systems operate and how LED lights can save energy. There also is a high demand for engineers and technicians in the electrical and renewable energy fields.
Also on August 30th, Farmingdale State College will be in attendance and have a hydrogen powered go-cart with them.
AUGUST 30
SUNY New Paltz will showcase its 3D printing initiative, including 3D printer demonstrations, as well as information on the new Advanced Certificate in Trauma and Disaster Mental Health. An admissions counselor will also be on hand to answer any questions visitors may have about the campus or the admissions process.
AUGUST 31
Health and medicine are among the fastest growing career opportunities. Visit with SUNY Upstate Medical University and learn about a variety of options. Take a quiz and learn if you’re best suited for a “high tech” or “high touch” profession — or a bit of both! Test your knowledge of the human systems. Try on a white coat. Get on-the-spot advice about the great resources SUNY has to offer, including recognized faculty, state tuition, and education that can make a difference for your future.
SEPTEMBER 2
Visit the SUNY Potsdam table and make your very own Flubber! Explore the science behind this colorful polymer with this fun and informative activity, just like the Absent-Minded Professor. Can you turn this material into a new form of energy for all to use? Potsdam will also be a special giveaway for alumni friends and information for prospective students available.
So if You’re looking for some fun and interactive science activities, there are plenty of things to see and do at the New York State Fair!
