Documentary Wins Three Sports Emmy Awards

The Showtime Sports production A Game Of Honor, a documentary focused around the Army-Navy football game that also featured the inspiring story of SUNY Maritime football head coach Clayton Kendrick-Holmes, himself a Navy graduate, won three Emmy Awards at the 33rd Annual Sports Emmys held on April 30.

“It was a special privilege for me and my wife Johanna to be at the Sports Emmys with the Showtime/CBSSports.com team and to celebrate the victory with them, which was so well deserved,” said Kendrick-Holmes. “We were just as nervous during the announcement as before any rivalry game kickoff!”

Johanna Kendrick-Holmes has a SUNY connection as well, currently working in the SUNY System Administration Office of Strategic Planning.

The feature won Emmys for Outstanding SPORTS DOCUMENTARY, Outstanding SPORTS PROMOTIONAL ANNOUNCEMENT – EPISODIC and Outstanding NEW APPROACHES SPORTS PROGRAMMING with CBSSports.com. The New Approach Emmy win was for the collaborative effort between SHOWTIME and CBSSports.com on the A Game Of Honor multi-part web series.

That web series, which can be found in its entirety by following this link, had two webisodes debut in late November 2011 that featured the unique story of Kendrick-Holmes’ call to duty to serve with the U.S. Naval Reserve in Afghanistan at the conclusion of the 2010 Maritime football season.

“SHOWTIME and CBSSports.com did a tremendous job of telling the story of how Army-Navy Football ties into our overall national defense,” added Kendrick-Holmes. “To have the story of my family and the Maritime football team represent the stories of the many Reservists and their families and jobs was an honor.”

EDT THE PRESIDENT: Hello, New York! (Applause.) Thank you. Thank you so much. Thank you. Everybody, please have a seat. It is great to be back in Albany. It is wonderful to be with all of you here today.

Yesterday, President Obama visited the University at Albany’s College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering, where he was given a tour of the facility and delivered a speech on the U.S. economy.   Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher had this to say on President Obama’s visit.

Today it was my honor to join Governor Andrew Cuomo as SUNY and the Capital District welcomed President Barack Obama to the University at Albany.

“Our College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering served as an ideal backdrop as the President outlined his vision for rebuilding the American economy. SUNY’s role as a leading economic driver has been a beacon for job growth and for the preparation of tomorrow’s highly skilled workforce, helping to position New York as a model for the nation.

“It takes visionary leaders like President Obama and Governor Cuomo, responsible public-private partnerships, an engaged community, and a higher education network that is committed to meeting workforce demands to achieve what we have in New York. It is clear from my ongoing conversations with President Obama and the White House around college cost and preparing America’s next generation of innovators that he aims to bring these values to scale across the country.

“I commend President Obama for his strong leadership on economic development and his determined focus on creating – as we say here in New York – jobs, jobs, jobs.”

SUNY and Community Leaders Launch The Albany Promise Cradle-to-Career Partnership

SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher and education, government, and community leaders in the City of Albany today launched The Albany Promise Cradle-to-Career Partnership, which brings together regional civic organizations, school districts, colleges, and elected officials in a commitment to improve the education pipeline locally.

At today’s launch, the partnership also released The Albany Promise 2012: Baseline Report To The Community, which provides a snapshot of current student academic achievement and well-being data such as kindergarten readiness, proficiency in English and Math, and high school graduation rates, as well as statistics on bullying, substance abuse, missed classes, and more. The metrics in the report were chosen to create a student roadmap to success. Subsequent reports on the partnership’s progress will be issued each year.

“The launch of Albany Promise marks the critical first step toward a brighter future for all of Albany’s schoolchildren,” said SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher. “SUNY and the national Strive Network are proud to support this effort. The Albany Promise partners are to be commended for their commitment to working together to improve the city’s education system and ensure that every student in Albany has an opportunity for success within that system. Congratulations to all involved.”

Albany Promise partners will meet monthly to align and leverage the city’s existing resources to drive better results in education. They will evaluate the baseline report and work collaboratively to improve the metrics and give every child access to high-quality early learning programs and services; ambitious, rigorous and comprehensive education reforms; college- and career-readiness programs; and family and community supports, including improved family engagement in student learning through adult education opportunities.

SUNY is also an important partner in cradle-to-career networks that have formed throughout New York, in Clinton County, Harlem, Rochester, and Queens. In addition, many other neighborhoods in the State have expressed interest in pursuing this major education reform initiative.
