As an economic driver in New York State, SUNY capitalizes on the opportunity to profoundly affect New Yorkers by instating smart, and sometimes bold, environmental goals.
Today we focus on a recent national intercampus achievement and groundbreaking systemwide initiative that both focus on the environment. And to kick off our highlighting of SUNY’s eco-friendly push, our Generation SUNY team spoke to SUNY ESF faculty expert Dr. Elizabeth Folta on how SUNY students can maximize (or minimize!) their impact throughout the year with our brand-new video series, Interview With A. At 119½ East Wendell St., Endicott, sits a 345-square-foot home built by two Binghamton University students.
Michael Zella and Ashley Haugstatter, who attended high school together in Long Island, were inspired by the small house movement to build their own home 15 minutes from campus. The movement encourages downsizing to save money and have a smaller environmental footprint.
“I like the fact that you can own something free and clear with no mortgage and still have a high quality of living, just on a smaller scale,” Zella said. “Last winter we were sitting around talking about it, and we decided we were going to buy land and build a house.”
As the nation gears up to celebrate Earth Day on April 22, SUNY is once again recognized for its outstanding commitment to environmental conservation. The Princeton Review, in collaboration with the Center for Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), this week salutes eight SUNY campuses among the 230 most environmentally responsible “green colleges” in the United States and Canada.
“SUNY’s commitment to an energy-smart New York and to sustainability throughout our system is a critical component of our strategic plan, one that our campuses have widely embraced and consistently shown leadership on,” said SUNY Chancellor Zimpher. “Congratulations to the eight SUNY campuses listed in the 2013 Guide to Green Colleges. This recognition is much deserved and highly commendable.”

SUNY Mascot Madness is all about SUNY engagement; students, fans, alumni, and community members rally together to boost their favorite SUNY mascot up. But what’s the reasoning behind two hundred thousand votes cast in 2013?
As we approach the end of this year’s competition (which you still have some time to vote in if you haven’t already), we compiled the best mascot quotes from their profiles to explore the differences in personalities between the mascots. After all, who would have otherwise known that some North Country mascots have a longing to meet? Or how each of the 30 mascots joined their SUNY campus? Just like SUNY students, our mascots are diverse, energetic, and passionate!
Ten SUNY campuses’ graduate programs are named among the nation’s top graduate programs for 2014, according to U.S. World and News Report. The rankings, released in March, highlight over 75 tracks at the ten campuses in each subject’s top 100; many other SUNY schools are recognized in the full report.
According to U.S. News, the rankings are based on two types of data: expert opinions about program excellence and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school’s faculty, research and students. The data come from surveys of administrators at more than 1,250 programs and more than 13,000 academics and professionals conducted during the fall of 2012 and early 2013.
“We are thrilled to see SUNY colleges and universities once again ranked among the best in the country by U.S. News & World Report,” said State University of New York Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher. “The SUNY campuses to make the 2014 Best Graduate Schools list are consistently recognized for the top quality and top value that they offer students, and rightly so. Congratulations to our many campuses and their respective presidents and educators on this much deserved recognition.”
