SUNY Mascot Madness is all about SUNY engagement; students, fans, alumni, and community members rally together to boost their favorite SUNY mascot up.  But what’s the reasoning behind two hundred thousand votes cast in 2013?

As we approach the end of this year’s competition (which you still have some time to vote in if you haven’t already), we compiled the best mascot quotes from their profiles to explore the differences in personalities between the mascots.  After all, who would have otherwise known that some North Country mascots have a longing to meet?  Or how each of the 30 mascots joined their SUNY campus?  Just like SUNY students, our mascots are diverse, energetic, and passionate!

Research: SUNY Contributes Researchers, Development, Data Analysis to NASA

SUNY contributes to NASA research

Three SUNY campuses may now tout relations with the world’s leading aerospace engineering organization, NASA.

  • SUNY Oswego recently announced that three more undergraduate students will intern this summer in NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory;
  • NASA last week announced that it will be launching a satellite into orbit which was designed by students from the University at Buffalo; and
  • A Stony Brook University expert this year utilized data from two NASA tools to help Look for Life on Mars.

Study Abroad with SUNY in Ireland

Study abroad with SUNY in IrelandWith St. Patrick’s Day recently passing, Irish eyes were smiling while looking at opportunities within SUNY. Several SUNY schools offer a very unique array of study abroad opportunities with nearly 600 programs in more than 50 countries. Ireland is among those countries where students could study for as long as one semester or academic year, or have a short-term experience during the winter or summer. Internships, volunteer and service learning opportunities are also available in Ireland. Each program ensures an unforgettable experience for students.

Alumni Profile: Shawn Yetter

Alumni Profiles is an ongoing series highlighting successful graduates who, with a SUNY education, achieved interesting and influential careers.

Shawn YetterShawn Yetter is the Commissioner of Tioga County Department of Social Services in New York.  He is a graduate of Broome Community College, Class of 1982, and SUNY Oswego, Class of 1988.

Yetter has spent the last three decades in public and private sectors in the health and human services arena, where most of that was in leadership positions.  He is now actively involved in organizational and community development projects around the Owego, NY area, where Yetter lives.

Using his managerial expertise and applying his social science background, Yetter serves as: Board Member (and past President) of Tioga United Way, Inc.; Advisory Board member of Lourdes Hospice; Board Member of New York Public Welfare Association; and Board Member of Broome-Tioga Workforce Investment Board.  Yetter is also a Board Member of the Broome Community College Foundation, which provides financial support for students enrolled at his Alma Mater.

As Commissioner of Tioga County Social Services, Yetter leads a 100-person staff to serve a population of 52,000, budget of $22 million, and over 30 diverse Federal and State programs.

SUNY Sports Bring Students, Alumni, and Community Together

At each SUNY campus, large and small, the student community is tight-knit and personal. To help our universities keep this quality, there are multiple sporting events which bring students, alumni, and the community together. Whether competing as NCAA, NJCAA, NAIA, USCAA, or competitive club and intramural teams, athletics play a big role in keeping the student population involved. The high-level competition among our SUNY athletes matches the academic quality of the college experience across the state.
