Ten SUNY campuses’ graduate programs are named among the nation’s top graduate programs for 2014, according to U.S. World and News Report. The rankings, released in March, highlight over 75 tracks at the ten campuses in each subject’s top 100; many other SUNY schools are recognized in the full report.
According to U.S. News, the rankings are based on two types of data: expert opinions about program excellence and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school’s faculty, research and students. The data come from surveys of administrators at more than 1,250 programs and more than 13,000 academics and professionals conducted during the fall of 2012 and early 2013.
“We are thrilled to see SUNY colleges and universities once again ranked among the best in the country by U.S. News & World Report,” said State University of New York Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher. “The SUNY campuses to make the 2014 Best Graduate Schools list are consistently recognized for the top quality and top value that they offer students, and rightly so. Congratulations to our many campuses and their respective presidents and educators on this much deserved recognition.”

Ten SUNY schools are ranked among top values in the nation for in-state and out-of-state education in Kiplinger’s Personal Finance 2013 list of Best Values in Public Colleges, according to The Buffalo News. The rankings, WHAM-TV says, “recognize four-year schools that combine outstanding education with economic value.”
“I believe this ranking and others like it reflect what Geneseo focuses on year after year: A commitment at every level to providing the highest quality undergraduate learning experience possible,” said Christopher C. Dahl, president of SUNY Geneseo. “Students here are challenged in the classroom, but they also enjoy life-enhancing experiences beyond class that result in graduates thoroughly prepared for the next phase of their lives and for leadership in the 21st century. We frequently receive thanks from alumni for what the liberal and liberating education at Geneseo has done for them.”
The Huffington Post, which reported on the same story, says that the rating agency, Kiplinger, “…assesses quality according to a number of measurable standards, including the admissions rate, the percentage of students who return for sophomore year, the student-faculty ratio and the four-year graduation rate. Cost criteria include low tuition, abundant financial aid and low average debt at graduation.”

Critics are giving author and graphic novelist Alison Bechdel rave reviews for her latest graphic memoir, Are You My Mother? A Comic Drama, just released. Hailed as “magnificent,” “inventive,” and “satisfying,” her follow-up to the 2006 Fun Home—which dealt with the death of her father—traces her troubled relationship with her still-living mother.
“I haven’t encountered a book about being an artist, or about the punishing entanglements of mothers and daughters, as engaging, profound or original as this one in a long time. In fact the book made such a deep impression on me that after reading it, I walked around for days seeing little bits and snatches of my life as Alison Bechdel drawings,” reports Katie Roiphe in the New York Times.
Purchase College welcomes Bechdel to campus as the Royal & Shirley Durst Distinguished Lecturer on October 17, 2012.
“The Durst Lectures are an exciting extension of the wide range of offerings at Purchase College that involve writers and writing,” said Louise Yelin, chair of the School of Humanities and a literature professor here. “They complement our extensive curriculum in creative writing, dramatic writing, and journalism. Over the years, they have brought us such distinguished writers as Art Spiegelman, Tony Kushner, and Sharon Olds.”
