Sullivan’s Metamorphosis Class, which is a freshman academic and personal success course has a service-learning component built into it. This year, they conducted a food drive and hosted a bake sale to raise money for the community. Monies raised and food donated were presented to the Sullivan County Federation for the Homeless during the half-time of a recent SUNY Sullivan Men’s Basketball Game. Money and food raised for the Sullivan County Federation helps out the community greatly as the federation operates the only soup kitchen in the County. They operate a food pantry twice a month and also has a emergency food pantry available every day at all hours. In addition to food assistance, they offer housing and utility assistance program for people suffering from HIV/AIDS.
Before the game, Folks attending were encouraged to bring non-perishable donations of food, which will allowed them to get into the game for free. More than 200 food items were donated. Partnering academics and athletics to raise money for a non-profit organization goes above and beyond classroom standards, and teaches freshmen how they can give back to their new communities.
