The Hudson Valley Community College’s rigorous Liberal Arts and Sciences Honor Scholar program often calls itself a “community of scholars.” The emphasis was on community this month as students in the program helped package and deliver dozens of special “good night bags” to children at the Equinox Domestic Violence Shelter.
Albany County’s only shelter for survivors of domestic violence, Equinox provides a critical service to families in crisis. The shelter is a safe haven and these special “goodnight bags” make a child’s stay as “homey” as possible.
“Students in the Liberal Arts Humanities and Social Sciences Honors program engage in a variety of community service activities throughout the year. These activities not only benefit the community but also help students to develop a connection with the community,” said Department Chair Heather Chase. “A connection to the community is part of the life blood of a community college supporting and benefiting our students, our college and our community.”
Students collected blankets, flashlights, sketch pads, colored pencils, crayons and stuffed animals and gathered to pack them in early November. The students plan to deliver the bags to Equinox soon.
