SUNY Mascot Madness – Championship

411 thoughts on “SUNY Mascot Madness – Championship

  1. Right you are K! New Paltz was founded in 1828, and is one of the oldest colleges in the country. Stony Brook was founded as State University College of Long Island at Oyster Bay in 1957-they got a real campus in ’62 when Ward Melville of Tom McAn shoe fame donated a swath of Pine Barrens to the state.

  2. SHENNANIGANS. Stony Brook deserved this. I say we do a recount, or better yet, have the mascots do a showdown with different acts and be judged by 3 independent unbiased judges!

  3. idk why new paltz is so hyped about a mascot named juice. ima need all ya to calm down.

        1. Jugo, which is juice in spanish, is pronounced with an H, sounding like Hugo.

          1. “Hugo” is short for Huguenot which were thought to be the first settlers in New Paltz. They were French.

          2. Right. I was making fun of Julieana for thinking Hugo was juice. Guess it went over people’s heads.

    1. “The name is derived from Hugo Freer, who was one of the 12 original “Dusine” French Huguenots who founded New Paltz in 1677. The Freer house still stands just minutes from campus on the oldest street in America, Huguenot Street. Others made the connection of the Huguenots for the justification of the name, which also evoked the spirit of New Paltz history.”

      1. You may have had to hit refresh a few times, but it was accessible right until the end. =)

    1. it was up and down like crazy, you just had to refresh over and over. possibly because like 500 votes came in at the end haha this was insane

      1. Since when was 50 votes not considered close? Then again, you can’t even spell Kanye…

        1. You should take into account the total number of votes when making a comparison. In this case, it’s less than 2/10th of 1%, so I certainly think that qualifies. However, if it was the US Senate we were talking about, a difference of 50 votes is pretty much a landslide. (ie. NOT close)

          1. Yes but there are 100 people in the US senate. So if there is a difference of 50 votes than that difference is big because there are only 100 votes total. In this case there were 34,660 votes so a difference of 50 votes is very small.

        2. You wouldn’t get the reference if you aren’t a gamer. In gaming, you usually say “good game” at the end to show sportsmanship.

“NOT EVEN CLOSE, BABY” is a phrase that a pro-gamer/streamer says when he gets away with a sliver of life. When in actuality, it was sooo close.

There’s no need to be negative and pick on someone, especially when it has nothing to do with SUNY Mascots.

    1. A seawolf is not a fish. It’s an urban legend from Alaska that if hunters ever saw it they would have luck during the hunting season. Make sure you know what you’re talking about before you insult an entire university.

  4. Its been rumored that there are people inside the mascots.. this has got to be false.

    1. stony brook has way more people than we do … As much as I would want HUGO to win its not possible 🙁

  5. Let’s show Stonybrook what a small school can really bring!!!! VOTE FOR HUGO!!!! HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. I think I might go into cardiac arrest from this round… Neck to neck, but Wolfie will win!!!!

  7. Less than two hours to go! You can do it Wolfie! WHAT’S A SEAWOLF!? I’M A SEAWOLF!

  8. So happy to see my dear old Alma Mater doing so well. Vote Hugo! Go Hawks!

  9. Come on New Paltz- Go HUGO!!!! Both schools have done a great job-nice to see all the SUNY school spririt!
    Go Hugo Go!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. New Paltz may be smaller, but this school has more spirit per square foot than a haunted house. Hugo!

  11. Thanks so very much for all of the New Paltz Support. We may be a small school, but we have amazing students, alum, and friends!!! <3.

  12. Q: WHAT’S A HAWK?!
A: I DON’T NEED TO ASK THAT BECAUSE I KNOW WHAT A HAWK IS!

HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      1. Hugo should deff follow in Wolfies foot steps and maybe he can one day reach the pinnacle that wolfie is already on with all the activities on campus that wolfie is involved in. I’m sure Hugo is at every basketball game but wolfie is everywhere in every event and even in random areas meeting and greeting and joking with the students on campus. Wolfie does 100 times more admirable work then Hugo hands down. So the fact that wolfie dances doesn’t make Hugo any less of a mascot, but it deff makes Hugo a less spirited mascot. Which is the main idea of this poll. VOTE WOLFIE VOTE FOR SPIRIT VOTE FOR WOLFIE!!!

  13. But seriously though, vote for New Paltz! We’ve got spirit and heart that is unlike any other school. H-A-W-K-S!!! HUGO THE HAWK! <3

  14. Go Seawolves Go Seawolves Go
    Seawolves Go Seawolves Go Sea
Wolves Go Sea Wolves Go Sea Wolves

    1. Uh hmm did you consider the fact that other people from other SUNY’s can vote too? Just asking *shrug*

    2. hmmm, lets see there. Maybe because you do not need to go to New Paltz to vote? No, can’t be.

    3. Because there are more than just current students voting… The whole point of this is to see who has the better mascot, not who has more students.

    4. So I guess this contest should just be decided based on enrollment size alone? Then why not hand the prize to Buffalo.

And you forget. You don’t have to be a current New Paltz student to vote. We have many active alumni and even other universities love New Paltz.

    5. You also need to add in all of the alumni, parents, friends, professors, staff and administrators as well as all of the other SUNY schools that are against Stony Brook winning.

      GO HUGO.

    6. Because there are a lot of people who graduated from New Paltz/have friends who go there/like our majestic mascot.

    7. something called a public vote, its open to the public not just people who go to the school

    8. Alumni! New Paltz school spirit goes beyond the current population! Let’s go HUGO!!!!

    9. Anyone is allowed to vote. Alumni, and anyone with computer access. Just because there are more than just students voting doesn’t mean we are voting multiple times.

    10. Because we have school spirit and get our friends and families to vote? Or everyone just realizes HOW AWESOME HUGO IS :D!!!

    1. I know I’m an Alum! There are more than 60,000 of us! Once a Hawk always a Hawk. Go Hugo!

  15. The voting button is not present, can someone please fix this since the competition is at a crucial stage?

    1. You cannot use wolfie-net…try 3G on a phone or an Ethernet cable for a computer. That’s what I had to do for it to work.

      1. Does it matter ? We’re voting for the best mascots not whose the real animal. I see many comments about this… seriously ?

  16. WOLFIE ALL DAY ERRDAYYYYY 😀 too bad I don’t have the voting button showing up to vote D:

      1. Wolfie-net doesn’t allow it… I had to use my phone on 3G and my roommate had to use an Ethernet cable so try that All Stony Brook students.. Go wolfie!!!

  17. Let’s go hawks!!!! HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. I’m very proud to be a hawk, but I wish Wolfie the best of luck as well! Hugo and Wolfie are very different, but each are amazing mascots! Good luck, everyone! 😀

  19. ALL DAY…… SEAWOLF status.. I dont know what a seawolf is but YOLO. I like the Stonybrook swag

    1. That’s not a hawk… It’s a fully grown golden eagle. Whilst larger hawks can take down young deer, that is definitely not a young deer. The bird in that video is twice the size of a hawk, and does not have a white underbelly.

  20. Wolfie Wolfie Wolfie Wolfieeee!!! We know how to do it at SBU. What’s a Seawolf? I’m a Seawolf!!!!!!! Bring it 😉

    1. it’s a fish in wolf’s clothing, because seawolves aren’t really wolves. they’re fish.

      1. Hawks aren’t really blue either, but you don’t see us harping on that, nor is our mascot the North Atlantic Wolf Fish, it is the mythical creature that is said to bring good luck. SBU ALL DAY

  21. Lets go New Paltz !!! 3 times SMAL:LER than the Big Bad Wolf! SB has 25,000 students vs NP which has 7800. GO HAWKS! Take down Wolfie!

    1. Well done!! Hugo is totally a secret member of the Avengers Initiative! GO NEW PALTZ

  22. Your support for New Paltz would be greatly appreciated :-). Great school, great people, and clearly lots of pride for a smaller school…Well done, Hugo!!

    1. Seems your post had a few typos let me help you.

Your support for Stony Brook would be greatly appreciated . Great school, great people, and clearly lots of pride…lets go Wolfie!!

    1. “The winning school will receive a prize from the SUNY System Administration Office of Communications to commemorate the victory.”

  23. Not gonna lie, this is actually a pretty close match. Im all for either team, since we have more people voting for us than any other SUNY college! Go teams!

  24. Go New Paltz! Go Hawks! We may be small, but we have a lot of pride!!

“The wild hawk stood with the down on his beak
And stared with his foot on the prey.”

  25. Come on New Paltz!!!!! We can do this! 😀 HUGO HUGO HUGO HUGO!!!!!!!!!!!

      1. IM NOT EVEN FROM NEW YORK BUT I KNOW WHAT A SEAWOLF IS!!!! LETS GO WOLFIE!!!!
HELL YEAH CHRISSY AND ALEXA. YOU GUYS ARE THE COOLEST!!!

  26. They may be tracking voting by gateway… nobody in my office can vote now that one person has… and I can’t even use my phone over the wifi. Overly specific tech department.

    1. Um. More than just students can vote. These results aren’t skewed. It just means that we have a lot of support behind us!

    2. New Paltz has 8000 students including graduate students. You also need to add in all of the alumni that are voting, parents, friends as well as all of the professors, staff and administrators.

    3. Yes it does. Also, parents, friends, faculty, staff, alumni, locals, and don’t forget that other schools that are now out can still vote too

    1. Don’t count your chickens before they’ve hatched…Wolfie has plenty of time to catch up. We were behind by over 300 votes at 11:30 last Thursday and then we ended up beating Binghamton by 400 votes. That is 700 votes in 30 minutes.

    1. It won’t let anybody vote in my house, even on the other computers. I think it’s because we’re all on the same IP address?

    1. actually they’re both real animals… a seawolf is just misrepresnted… believe me if you were to see a real seawolf you’d be voting for the mascot just because it looks infinitely better.
but since you’re for NP then ok. but just trying to tell you they’re both real animals.

      1. It is mythical, the seawolf you posted is just a homophone. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolfie_the_Seawolf)

The kind of seawolf Wolfie is, is a mythical creature that brought good luck to a people who have seen it. It was said to be a wolf that lived in the water. It was killed by a trapper (hence, why Wolfie won’t win this) who wore its fur to help him catch fish while the village was going through a tough time.

  27. A HAWK A WOLF… ??? We live in EAGLE country…not even sure what Mascots do or why Teams have them but if they are necessary for helping folks cheer for their favorite team… Use whichever one works best for ALL!
As long as they are positive for the team cohesiveness.

    1. Go for Wolfie, he invited all the other mascots from schools big and small to his 16th B-Day party. He’s inclusive.

  28. GO HUGO, GO HUGO, GO HUGO, GO HUGO, GO HUGO, GO HUGO, GO HUGO, GO HUGO, GO HUGO, GO HUGO, GO HUGO, GO HUGO, GO HUGO, GO HUGO, GO HUGO, GO HUGO, GO HUGO, GO HUGO, GO HUGO, GO HUGO, GO HUGO, GO HUGO, GO HUGO, GO HUGO, GO HUGO, GO HUGO, GO HUGO, GO HUGO, GO HUGO, GO HUGO, GO HUGO, GO HUGO, GO HUGO, GO HUGO, GO HUGO, GO HUGO, GO HUGO,

  29. I’m all for New Paltz, but I wish Hugo was not “baby blue!” It makes him look like a nursery stuffed animal, almost. I wish he was a bit more realistically represented, chromatically. New Paltz (the town) DOES have a variety of hawks–very cool, impressive, raptors–to be reckoned with among the bird population, (and hopefully in “the sports arena!”). Maybe there’s a good reason, however, so don’t condemn me if there is, I’m an old person who graduated from NP a while ago and was old when I attended, therefore never got to get “into” the whole rah-rah scene.

    1. Seems like it should be a Peregrine Falcon since there was long a professor in the Bio department who was noted for his study of them.

  30. Woah, everyone chill. Let’s talk about how our 2 schools are significantly better than every other SUNY. Stop with the hostility. Hugo’s chill, so is Wolfie. No need to be bashing on other schools. LOOK WHAT THIS WAR HAS DONE TO US!

      1. We need Brennan Huff(Will Ferrell) and Dale Doback (John C. Reilly) to come and sing “Por ti Volare” and restore the relationships we have broken during this war.

      2. I wish we could all get along like we used to in middle school… I wish I could bake a cake filled with rainbows and smiles and everyone would eat and be happy

  31. You guys are a D1 school, have 4 times as many students as we do….idc if you had to vote in the Library….Stony Brook has the clear advantage

    1. -__- but anyone can vote.
      If you read below
      1) New Paltz beat out Maritime. Going by your logic, that wasn’t a fair fight either, but I don’t see you complaining about that.
      2) Binghamton beat out Buffalo, who is twice their size.

So just vote and stop complaining. It is not the presidential election. Both mascots are fine examples of school spirit. if you had any school spirit, you wouldn’t be so pessimistic about New Paltz winning over measly statistics that don’t hold any weight.

  32. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Hawk
He is flying though the doorway cause he never ever walks
He is flying through the rafters like a loyal loyal Hawk
    The Hawk will never Die!

  33. So let’s make this a little more clear.

This is not a seawolf, it is. But it’s not the one that Stony Brook represents:

    http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rEu4XCWNeCo/Tjz-TecFgaI/AAAAAAAAATU/TqJ6kIIs28E/s1600/Wolffish1.jpg

The seawolves that Stony Brook represent are “mythical sea creatures and according to the legend of the Seawolf, anyone fortunate enough to view it was subject to good luck.” unless

    http://www.strangescience.net/pics/seawolf.gif

    http://www.jaxbrewbitch.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/seawolf.jpg

    And more importantly,

    http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_BoUozunrfcs/TMYXWRBrEVI/AAAAAAAAA8k/o7JOx2hI7uw/s1600/25355_672788349754_16312227_38229824_6432039_n.jpg

    http://sb.cc.stonybrook.edu/happenings/wp-content/uploads/Wolfie4-1024×768.jpg

Also, New Paltz may have less students, but the Stony Brook internet network forbids some students to vote on campus. I personally had to go to the library to vote because I couldn’t vote in my dormroom. So stop with the: “Oh woe is me…” act.

    1. I’m from Farmingdale and was originally going to vote Stony Brook but the amount of malicious Stony brook commenters makes me want to vote otherwise. There’s a way to say things without being rude.

      Good luck New Paltz!

  34. We might be 1/4 the size of Stonybrook but we have the friendliest group of students and alumni with a lot of school spirit. Go New Paltz Hawks!!!! 🙂

  35. How is this a fair competition…new paltz has way less students…even if the entire school voted we still can be beaten…

    1. Thats the way life is. Harvard has more reviews because its been around longer, so should the ratings be skewed based on years the college has existed?

    2. 1) That makes Wolfie a better mascot. Bigger = Better (at least in this case)
      2) New Paltz beat out Maritime. Going by your logic, that wasn’t a fair fight either, but I don’t see you complaining about that.
      3) Binghamton beat out Buffalo, who is twice their size.
      4) Stop complaining, and get a better mascot.

      1. it’s all in good fun Jared. Our mascot is big blue and full of hope and laughter. I’m sad that you are so mad :(. are you mad? why are you so mad Jared?

      2. I agree with Werdna to some degree. We did beat out bigger schools but that’s because it wasn’t the final round so voters weren’t taking it as serious. SB is obviously now going to go hard on votes since it’s the FINAL, rendering it unfair to an extent since NP is drastically smaller.
Regardless of the outcome NP has held it down since the start of this contest, and being the size that it is just proves the amount of school spirit we have. I mean we aren’t called and revered as the “hottest small state school” in the nation for nothing.
Hugo, like NP, is a champion. SB and Wolfie (because that’s SUCH a creative name) the Seawolf (not even a real animal) are forgettable. So, even if they win this (which because of their size they most likely will) they will remain…forgettable.

        1. Anyone can vote in this, so school population has nothing to do with this. I can go to SB and vote for NP or vice versa.

If you strongly believe that Hugo is the best regardless of the result of this contest, good for you – it shows that you have school spirit and nothing can take that away from you.

If you would like to create excuses for a defeat while trashing the other school, it only proves how low of a standard you live your life by.

          1. “Jam” I completely agree! Personally, I don’t go to either school, I just know the mascot for SB and believe in them as a person to give it their all and that they are someone who never gives up and works towards being better everyday.

      3. Because, since we’re more spirited and have a better mascot, we could vote multiple times. In this round we can only vote once.

    3. Also, the vote is public. Any one can vote. It’s not limited to the students that attend both school.

    4. You would have a valid argument about student population if voting was only open to students, but in fact, everyone can vote. So go tell your parents to vote for your inferior hawk and stop complaining

  36. As someone who went to Stony Brook and then transferred to New Paltz, I speak with firsthand experience. SBU has absolutely 0 school spirit, and commuters go home on the weekends. GO HUGO!

    1. I’m sorry when did you graduate ???? because there is clearly numerous amount of events in this school both on the weekends and during the week coming from campus recreation, weekend life council, student groups, greek organizations, and instate/out of state clubs. No school spirit? are you kidding me ? lol have you seen the student zone on football games? I bet you’ve never seen a student wear red on a friday either. Maybe you should recheck your percentage of school spirit SBU has based on actual data because if it was 0% we wouldn’t be competing for the final. Commuters go home on the weekends, maybe because they were like you! people who clearly do not get involved or step foot outside their room or the library have no right to say this school is boring. There is only so much students and staff on this campus can do for others to come out and enjoy. Sucks you had a bad time at Stony Brook, and sucks even more that your lovely school and Hugo will be losing to a “absolutely 0 school spirit”.

      1. LMAO
        good one!
SBU commuters actually go home everyday . . . that’s why they are called commuters

      2. Well besides the large body of actual commuters, a sizable percentage of those who live on campus are from LI and the city and jump home on the train/their car on the weekends.

    2. You obviously havent been going to the right events. Have you even been to a football game?

  37. Me and my buddies from Inci Sozluk got this. Wolfie for the Championship

    WE ARE SEAWOLVES!!!!

  38. That awkward moment when you realize there are a lot of farmingdale people who go to stony brook… who will we choose..

  39. So we can only vote once, but one school is 1/4 the size of the other one?
    …seems fair

    1. Most Stony students can’t vote because our internet is refusing to let us actually do so

    2. New Paltz (UG Population of about 7,800) beat out Maritime (UG Population of about 1,500)
And yet you didn’t complain about that.

      Totally fair.

  40. can’t believe a school 1/4 the size of stony brook is beating us… come one seawolves!!!

  41. NEW PALTZ is the best school, with the best mascot! We have so much love and pride….thats why we are winning

  42. Q: WHAT’S A HAWK?
A: any of numerous diurnal birds of prey belonging to a suborder (Falcones of the order Falconiformes) and including all the smaller members of this group

    Q: WHAT’S A SEAWOLF?
A: A catfish. Like the tv show?

    GO SUNY NEW PALTZ!!!!!!!

      1. The Atlantic wolffish (Anarhichas lupus), also known as the Seawolf, Atlantic catfish, ocean catfish

        You’re Welcome 🙂

    1. I’M A SEAWOLF!

And no, a Seawolf is not a catfish.
      1) Seawolf is a USS Submarine
      2) Seawolf (the fish) has the Latin name of Anarhichas lupus, whereas the catfish has the Latin name Siluriforms cuvier. They are in the same Class though, but then again, so is every ray-finned fish. Nice try, but not even close.
      3) Seawolf is also a creature from regional Native American folklore that brings good fortune to those that see it.

      So, I reiterate.:
      I’M A SEAWOLF!

  43. Who has this? The hottest small state schoool YUR YURR YURRRRR. New Paltz is where it izzzz @!!!! you better recognize

  44. Let’s go HUGO!!!! We didn’t make it this far for nothing–Let’s show ’em what we got New Paltz!

  45. Wolfie is LEAPS AND BOUNDS the best mascot in the state of NY, and one of the best on the east coast. Vote for Wolfie

      1. Now, that would be cheating. Surely your mascot can win without his fans cheating…right?

      2. I clearly didn’t encourage cheating lol. Don’t know who commented that above

  46. WOLFIEEEE!!! HE CAN FLIP, HE CAN SHUFFLE, HE CAN MOON WALK, HE CAN DO ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING AND HE CAN DEFINITELY KICK A HAWKS BUTT!!!!!!!

  47. This is the second round in a row that I haven’t been able to vote in, because the site defaults to the “results” screen…what gives?

  48. If it was a beauty contest, Wolfie would win.
If it was a fan contest, Wolfie would win.
If it was a community service contest, Wolfie would win.
    IF ANYTHING, WOLFIE WOULD WIN.

    Go Seawolves!
