Dr. Edward S. Marschilok is a community member, policymaker, and musician. Now known among his peers as “Dr. Music Ed”, he earned his Bachelor of Music Education degree from SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music in 1974 and continued his education at Syracuse University. He earned his Ph.D. in educational administration and policy studies in 1993 at the University at Albany before becoming a music instructor at various New York Schools.
Dr. Marschilok spent the majority of his professional career as a curriculum specialist for the New York State Education Department, where he coordinated the development and implementation of New York State Learning Standards for the Arts and managed the development of the Department’s Virtual Learning System for 21 years.
Later at the Department of Education, Dr. Marschilok’s influence grew to reach millions of students as he was chosen to lead the Department’s team of curriculum specialists in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Arts, Physical Education, School Library and Reading.

Colonel Thomas H. Palmatier is a musician, serviceman, and family man. He earned his Bachelor of Music degree from SUNY Potsdam in 1975, and went on to earn his Master of Fine Arts degree in music from Truman State University. He also later completed a Master of Strategic Studies degree from the U.S. Army War College.
Col. Palmatier was appointed ninth leader and commander of the U.S. Army Band, “Pershing’s Own,” in August 2011. He previously served as commander and conductor of the U.S. Army Field Band, making him the first officer to command both of the Army’s top premier bands. He is currently the senior military musician in the Department of Defense.
Among his accomplishments, Col. Palmatier has led the White House Herald Trumpets, performing at every ceremony the President of the United States attended and has conducted performances at five Presidential Inaugurations. He was the first Army Band officer to earn both the Parachutist and Air Assault Badges, and earned the right to wear a combat patch for service in El Salvador and Iraq.
His support for his alma mater has been unwavering, as he has returned to campus to lead masterclasses and conduct at The Crane School of Music, as well as for the Crane Youth Music camp and was honored with the 2010 Minerva Award by the SUNY Potsdam Alumni Association.
Col. Palmatier has also generously established the Band Guest Artist Fund at SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music to provide financial support for Crane’s band program in order to raise the program’s national profile. He and his wife, Shirley, are campaign leadership donors for Take the Lead: The Campaign for Potsdam, which aims to raise $27 million to support the SUNY Potsdam student experience by the College’s bicentennial in 2016.
SUNY Potsdam’s student radio station is in the running for a mtvU Woodie Award for the U.S.’s best college station. WAIH “The Way” is a top 10 finalist for the 2012 Woodie Awards, which highlight the music that’s voted the best by a college audience.

WAIH is a student-run, non-commercial radio station based at the SUNY Potsdam campus. The format of the station is mixed music, leaning towards alternative acts, and talk shows centered around subjects like sexuality, politics and music.
The 2012 mtvU Woodie Awards Festival will be held on March 15 at the South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas. The Woodie Awards Special will air on MTV and mtvU on Sunday, March 18, at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

Only at one of SUNY’s premier arts campuses would you find a fusion of talent like this! At SUNY Potsdam, home to the world-renowned Crane School of Music, the College performed a unique arts experiment to cap off the fall semester.
Bringing together the Crane Symphony Orchestra and Crane Chorus with SUNY Potsdam graduate student Elijah Foulks, also known as Knowle’ge ReignSupreme, who picked up the mic and began to rap as the musicians started improvising to back him up.

“This collaboration shows just how chameleon-like hip hop can be,” Foulks told the student newspaper, The Racquette. “Even this freestyle had jazz influences and classical influences that combined with my hip hop flow.”
The impromptu performance took place on the Helen M. Hosmer Concert Hall stage in between back-to-back Candlelight Concerts on Dec. 4, 2011. The project was the brainchild of Director of Marketing Deborah Dudley, who wanted to showcase the arts diversity that makes Potsdam stand out. Videographer Doyle Dean captured the experience.
