The holidays remind us this is the season of giving. All members of SUNY make a concerted effort to volunteer and contribute to their respective campuses and local communities. The 30 Days of Giving campaign highlights students and faculty across all of our 64 campuses who participate in volunteerism and give back to those in need. With over 467,000 students and three million alumni, we want to celebrate the impact the SUNY community has made in all of their unique community service projects. As we learned last year, the byproduct of taking volunteerism to scale is not only building character in our students themselves as they join our over three million alumni, but also to set an example of impact as the nation’s largest university system.

Day 9
Genesee Community College
Genesee Community College is jumping in once again to help raise money for Genesee County United Way. For the fifth year, GCC will host the Ducky Derby. This year’s event will take place on Thursday, March 7 at 12:30 PM. The event is organized by GCC’s Business Forum Club.
For the event, students sell numbered rubber ducks, which are then set free in the competition sized pool at GCC’s Batavia Campus. With the help of a ‘current’ created by members of the College Swim Team, the first duck that makes it to the end of the pool wins. The race has become a fun tradition on campus with the Cougar Cheer Team chiming and helping celebrate the race while students, staff and faculty turn out to cheer on their favorite duck and support the worthy cause.
Last year, the Business Forum Club sold 1,080 ducks, raising $2,523 for United Way, nearly $300 more than the previous year and a record since the event’s inception.
