New York State is home to more than 160 airports.
Between nearly a dozen aviation-related programs offered by public colleges across New York State, SUNY students have access to at least 45 airplanes, 1 helicopter, and 1 jet-powered go-kart. The vehicles are provided for training purposes as SUNY prepares New York’s workforce for the 21st Century global and competitive economy.
From piloting to aircraft maintenance and repair to aircraft power and technology, certificate and degree programs offered at colleges on Long Island and in upstate New York provide the perfect platform to help talented students to achieve their dream of working with and around flight equipment.
Even better, the demand for aviation continues to grow worldwide, and SUNY graduates from aviation programs are experiencing a high demand for the unique skillset. More than 90% of certified graduates from a Mohawk Valley Community College program that refreshes military veterans’ skills, for example, secure employment in the field immediately.
“I applied for three different employers when I graduated from this program,” says Frank Ryan of the College’s Class of 2012. “I actually got hired by all three.”
The extensive and talented training programs offered by Jamestown Community College, Farmingdale State College, Schenectady County Community College, and Dutchess Community College, in addition to Mohawk Valley Community College, will, in part, support the growing international investment in New York State fostered by Governor Cuomo’s innovative Start-Up NY program. Start-Up NY partners new or expanding businesses with SUNY campuses in order to provide research and job training opportunities for New Yorkers.
Farmingdale State College is home to the only four-year public aeronautical science program in New York State, with more than 200 students in the professional pilot and aviation administration programs.
We chatted with Vincent Belanger, a Certified Flight Instructor and student at SUNY Farmingdale State College on Long Island, NY, to learn a little more about the process of training an aspiring pilot:
