The SUNY Geneseo Center for Community hosted its annual Geneseo CARES event in October. Eighty-two students spread out over Livingston County to perform their acts of service.
All volunteers were recruited from the ranks of student organizations. The following organizations sent at least one team of volunteers to serve: Alpha Phi Omega; Circle K Club; GOLD mentors; Men of Action and Change; the Outing Club; Royal Lady Knights; Sigma Delta Tau; and Zeta Phi Beta.
The main theme of the service day was assisting elderly residents of Livingston County by traveling to their homes and providing the services of raking leaves, washing windows, and other outdoor chores. Due to the large number of student volunteers, the type of service was extended to include other projects throughout the area to help local organizations. The students traveled to and served a total of 22 locations, 17 of which were residential homes, while the other five were organizations. Students also covered a wide geographical range of Livingston County from Dansville to Caledonia, and Livonia to Mt. Morris.
The day was a success and with 82 students each volunteering for three hours, totaling about 246 hours of community service hours for the community.
