30 Days of Giving 2015: Old Westbury goes Shopping for Service

Old Westbury students go Shopping for Service

Just in time for the holidays, 20 SUNY Old Westbury students showed their giving spirit by participating in a charity shopping event in New York City on December 12, 2015. During the “Shopping for Service” day hosted by Catholic Charities of New York, the students were given the description of a family in need, and shopped on their behalf for clothing, bedding, and other necessities.

The SUNY Old Westbury team shopped for 15 families, representing approximately $4,500 in charitable spending. Overall, 500 volunteers shopped during the service day for more than 600 New York families, donating $200,000 in charitable items from Kmart.

“I began to develop the Old Westbury student team to participate in this shopping event a few months ago, and I am so very proud of the students who expressed interest and attended,” said Hugh Fox, lecturer in the Politics, Economics and Law Department. “They made a huge impact on New York City families in just one day.”
