On a sunny Saturday in the fall, students from the Community Service Club on Suffolk County Community College’s Ammerman Campus, brought some bright cheer to the residents at Island Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Holtsville, New York.
Visiting the residents in the local nursing home has been a tradition for the club, with one to two visits taking place per semester, since the club was formed in 2009. Students spend the morning there greeting the residents in their rooms and escorting them to the meeting room where they help staff serve beverages and treats for the coffee social. After the refreshments have been served, students mingle among the residents and engage in conversation, sharing stories about their lives. Both students and residents look forward to these visits and the intergenerational exchanges.
