New York in the fall is a beautiful sight – crisp morning air, vibrantly colored leaves, and the wafting scent of pumpkin spice are all characteristic of this beloved season. There’s no shortage of fun things to do outdoors in New York any time of year, and fall is no exception. Luckily, SUNY students need only step outside their dorm rooms to experience all of the wonderful autumn activities that New York has to offer – and we’ve got a couple of ideas to get you started.
Here’s some great activities at or around some or our SUNY campuses to enjoy this fall season.
1) Try horseback riding. If you’ve ever been to Saratoga during track season, you know that horse-related activities are popular among New Yorkers. Find out if your school offers horseback riding lessons – or even consider joining an equestrian team. At Morrisville State College, you can take your riding skills to the next level by participating in Hunt Seat Equestrian or Western Equestrian, both of which are Division III sports!
2) Go apple picking. Did you know that New York grows more apple varieties than any other state? Even if your school doesn’t have it’s own farm (like the TC3 Organic Farm) you can still enjoy the benefits of fresh produce. No matter which SUNY campus you attend, you’ll likely be able to find a farm nearby that offers the classic fall activity of apple picking.
3) Enjoy seasonal beers. Fall is a popular season for craft beers with the emergence of Oktoberfest, pumpkin ale, and other seasonal favorites. For burgeoning craft beer enthusiasts who are 21 and older, Mohawk Valley Community College offers a Craft Beer 101 course that covers terminology, recognizing styles, ingredients, making recommendations, and more.
4) Carve a pumpkin. You don’t need to be a fan of pumpkin-flavored everything to enjoy some good old-fashioned pumpkin carving. If you’ve got more of a mind for science than artistic ability, try your hand at pumpkin chucking instead! SUNY has an impressive history of pumpkin chucking professionals – in November 2013, the SUNY Ulster engineering club won the Punkin’ Chunkin’ event at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds.
5) Admire the fall foliage. You don’t even have to step foot off campus to appreciate the magic of the leaves changing color in New York. Do you think your SUNY school has the most beautiful autumn scenery? Share your campus fall foliage photos with us on Instagram by using #SUNYgram for a chance to be featured on our page!
