During this January’s winter break, SUNY Geneseo and the college/community organization Livingston CARES is preparing for work trips to Biloxi/Gulfport, Miss., and Brooklyn, N.Y., areas to continue repairing damage caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and Hurricane Sandy in 2012.
It will be the organization’s 35th work trip to the Gulf Coast since Katrina ravaged that area in 2005. Groups of students, faculty and community members also have done cleanup of damage caused by Hurricane Sandy on Long Island and Staten Island during past winter and spring breaks.
“It’s easy for people to forget about the long-term damage these horrendous storms have caused, but a great number of people still need help and will continue to need it for a long time,” said Tom Matthews, associate dean of leadership and service at Geneseo. “Students and community members are eager to participate in this work and it’s a tremendous example of service-learning, an important component of a liberal arts education.”
Livingston CARES is a non-profit group of Geneseo students, faculty and community members dedicated to local and global humanitarian projects. The college organized the group through the Center for Community, which emphasizes the vital link between service and leadership.
