As part of Dutchess Community College’s Service Learning initiative, students in Lindsey Guile’s Drawing II class met with residents of a local senior citizen residence, the Vassar Warner Senior Living Home. The students talked with the residents about the lives they had lived, their families, hobbies, etc. The information gathered by students was used, along with photos of the residents, to create portraits that showed the beauty in aging.
The portraits were exhibited in a pop-up art show for the residents and the families of the students. During the show, the students were also allowed to reunite with the residents and view the artwork together, renewing the bonds that were made during their initial meetings.
The goal of the project was to increase artistic and community collaboration among an underrepresented population both in art and culture.
