Get To Know Your 2017 Mascots – Region 2

In 2017, the 5th Annual Mascot Madness tournament, our campus representatives have come ready to play. 38 of the strongest, most energetic, campus representatives have put in long hours cheering on their teams, raising school spirit, and showing New York the great things about SUNY schools.

So what makes these guys tick? We had a chance to talk to each of them to get the answers ourselves. Read on to learn a little something about each of this year’s participants, arranged by the bracket they are competing in. Then, be sure to cast your votes in each round.

Below are the Region 2 participants.

Geneseo – Victor E. Knight (defending champion!)

1. What is your name?
   Victor E. Knight, the SUNY Geneseo Mascot.

2. What school are you from?
   SUNY Geneseo — Go Knights!

3. Favorite place to hang out in your campus?
   The MacVittie College Union due to my gregarious nature; however, I also spend a lot of time the in the Milne Library because I am a lifelong leaner.

4. One fact about your school/campus that most people don’t know?
   We have the Seuss Spruce! This pine tree in center of campus was warped into its current funky shape shortly before Dr. Seuss’ death in the winter of 1991.

5. Favorite on-campus eatery?
   Max Market in Letchworth Dining Complex because it is open late, and I am a “Knight owl.”

6. Cool thing to do in the surrounding area?
   Explore the “Grand Canyon of the East,” Letchworth State Park. It is one of the most picturesque areas in the Eastern U.S. with the mighty Genesee River and three major waterfalls it is a really “cool” thing to do.

7. One superpower you would want?
   Omnilinguilism — I would love to have the ability to understand any form of language and chat with anyone no matter their language. I could also ace CHINESE 202 and ARABIC 102.

8. Which of the Seven Dwarfs is most like you?
   Doc because someday I’d like to pursue a doctorate in mediaeval philosophy.

9. What is your favorite pizza topping?
   Cheese! Dairy is big in Western NY and it’s yummy.

10. Which mascot would you team up with in a three-legged race?
    Lucky Bronco from SUNY Delhi — I like horses, and I think we would have a great chance at coming in first.

Stony Brook – Wolfie

1. What is your name?
   Wolfie Seawolf, the best mascot around.

2. What school are you from?
   Stony Brook University, where Wolfie goes Far Beyond all other mascots.

3. Favorite place to hang out in your campus?
   Around Roth Pond is the best, there’s just so much to do. I can build a cardboard boat for the annual Roth Pond Regatta, play on the beach volleyball court, or grab some food at Roth Dining. Staller Steps is the best place to hang out, especially when it’s nice out. You won’t just find me lounging about, tons of people love to go and chill with friends. It’s a great place to toss a frisbee or a football around, listen to music, or just lie down and enjoy the outdoors.

4. One fact about your school/campus that most people don’t know?
   Before we were the Seawolves, we were known as the Patriots. When we jumped to Division I in 1994, the mascot name was changed to Seawolves and I was born!

5. Favorite on-campus eatery?
   The brand new East Side Dining Hall has killer burritos, great pizza, & delicious sandwiches.  Plus, they offer all-you-can-eat options when I’m really hungry!

6. Cool thing to do in the surrounding area?
   Long Island has the best beaches around.  The north shore is only a couple miles from campus, so I love heading to the beach after classes to unwind and relax

7. One superpower you would want?
   Teleporting! With so much to do on campus, teleporting would let me go from event to event to event all day long!

8. Which of the Seven Dwarfs is most like you?
   Wasn’t there some type of wolf in that story…

9. What is your favorite pizza topping?
   I’m an all-in kind of guy!

10. Which mascot would you team up with in a three-legged race?
    Benny the Bull from the Chicago Bulls, hands down. That guy can win anything.

SUNY Purchase – Perseus Panther

1. What is your name?
   I’m a Panther – Perseus the Panther!

2. What school are you from?
   Purchase College, SUNY … in Westchester County, New York.

3. Favorite place to hang out in your campus?
   The gym, DA!

4. One fact about your school/campus that most people don’t know?
   We have a cemetery on campus … spooky!

5. Favorite on-campus eatery?
   D-HALL! All you can eat!

6. Cool thing to do in the surrounding area?
   Zipline … We are adding one to our campus soon.

7. One superpower you would want?
   Telekinesis

8. Which of the Seven Dwarfs is most like you?
   Grumpy!!!

9. What is your favorite pizza topping?
   Buffalo chicken with ranch dressing!!!

10. Which mascot would you team up with in a three-legged race?
    The Carolina Panther … he’s a pro, been to the Super Bowl … Like a big brother to me.

SUNY Canton – Roody Roo

1. What is your name?
   Roody Roo

2. What school are you from?
   SUNY Canton

3. Favorite place to hang out in your campus?
   I like to spend time in the Roos House Athletic Center, because they named it after me.

4. One fact about your school/campus that most people don’t know?
   We recently added a Game Design and Development program and some of the students are making a video game about me.

5. Favorite on-campus eatery?
   Chaney Dining Center! They have a $5 Friday all-you-can-eat lunch special. I’m a vegetarian, so I make several trips to the salad bar.

6. Cool thing to do in the surrounding area?
   Skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, snowboarding – everything is cool in the wintertime!

7. One superpower you would want?
   The ability to leap over tall buildings in a single bound.

8. Which of the Seven Dwarfs is most like you?
   Kanga and Roo. Oh wait, they were in another movie.

9. What is your favorite pizza topping?
   Vegemite

10. Which mascot would you team up with in a three-legged race?
    I’m a close friend of Max C. Bear from SUNY Potsdam… But I really wouldn’t mind teaming up with Orvis the Pioneer from Alfred State because he’s always happy.

Broome Community College – Stinger

1. What is your name?
   His Majesty, Stinger the Hornet. Latin-speakers may call me Vespa. Pig Latin speakers may call meInger-stay.

2. What school are you from?
   SUNY Broome, a fabulous hive in Binghamton!

3. Favorite place to hang out in your campus?
   I like to maintain my cool at our Ice Center, where I can strap on my skates and really fly! During the warmer months, I buzz along to the Natural Areas surrounding campus, which feature hilly hikes and enlightening ecosystems that our students use as an open-air ecology lab.

4. One fact about your school/campus that most people don’t know?
   We have a fabulous campus just outside of Dickinson and an excellent satellite location in Owego, but we have an equally awesome virtual campus. Students from around the state, country and world take online courses here at SUNY Broome – even in Siberia! (Seriously, they do, thanks to an agreement with Novosibirsk State University in Russia.)

5. Favorite on-campus eatery?
   Our American Food & Dining cafeteria has EVERYTHING! Of course it’s my favorite place to eat. Taco Tuesday is a tradition, peeps.

6. Cool thing to do in the surrounding area?
   We have a ton, from hiking and biking in the rolling hills of the Southern Tier, to getting out culture on at the monthly First Friday Art Walks downtown. But right now, I am eagerly watching Animal Adventure’s Giraffe Cam to see when April the giraffe has her baby. (The animal park is in nearbyHarpursville, although people all over the world are watching the cam!)

7. One superpower you would want?
   Well, I already have flight, so I’m going to go with spontaneous glitter production. I’ll be a hit at the Color Run, which takes place on our campus in the spring.

8. Which of the Seven Dwarfs is most like you?
   Normally I’d say Happy! But during allergy season some might call me Sneezy. That pollen: It’s a buzzkill.

9. What is your favorite pizza topping?
   Extra sauce! I like my pizzas just like me: saucy.

10. Which mascot would you team up with in a three-legged race?
    Well considering I have wings, a three-legged race really wouldn’t slow my team down. But I’d want my trusty pal, the Binghamton University Bearcat, to be with me when we fly across that finish line!

SUNY Potsdam – Max C. Bear

1. What is your name?
   Max C. Bear, because I get the crowd ramped up to the MAX!

2. What school are you from?
   Good old SUNY Potsdam! The oldest college in the SUNY system; with age comes experience, folks.

3. Favorite place to hang out in your campus?
   Maxcy Hall, of course! I can lift weights in the Shane T. Shaul Fitness Center, scale the indoor rock-climbing wall, and swim in our awesome pool (sadly, there are no fish in the water).

4. One fact about your school/campus that most people don’t know?
   Back in 1871 when SUNY Potsdam was The Potsdam Normal School, our first class of graduates only had two members; now we fill up the academic quad with a ton of graduates!

5. Favorite on-campus eatery?
   Hard to say, seeing as SUNY Potsdam has the No. 1 dining in SUNY, but I’d go with Dexter’s Café. Their soups of the day are always tasty, like Red Cardinal stew or veggies-and-Kangaroo soup. Yum!

6. Cool thing to do in the surrounding area?
   There’s so much to do in and around Potsdam, like going to see the Met Opera Live in HD at the Roxy Theater or paddling on the Racquette River! Outside of Potsdam, though, I enjoy going to Whiteface for some skiing and snowboarding, or visiting my fellow bears in the 46 High Peaks of the Adirondacks too!

7. One superpower you would want?
   The power to create an unlimited amount of salmon to eat without having to catch them (it’s harder than it looks).

8. Which of the Seven Dwarfs is most like you?
   Sleepy, but only because I’m a bear and have to hibernate. When I’m awake, I’m a beast!

9. What is your favorite pizza topping?
   Since I can’t get my normal helpings of fresh salmon, I’d say anchovies.

10. Which mascot would you team up with in a three-legged race?
    SUNY Cortland’s Blaze Dragon, because instead of hobbling like everyone else, we could just fly! AND we’d have my awesome Bear claws too. We would totally dominate the competition.

Jamestown Community College – JJ Jayhawk

1. What is your name?
   JJ Jayhawk

2. What school are you from?
   Jamestown Community College

3. Favorite place to hang out in your campus?
   In and around our beautiful pond. It’s so relaxing and comfortable.

4. One fact about your school/campus that most people don’t know? Founded in 1950, we are proud to be the first SUNY community college.

5. Favorite on-campus eatery? Cyber Café!
   Unfortunately, they don’t serve rodents, but their chicken tenders are incredible.

6. Cool thing to do in the surrounding area?
   I love getting my feathers wet in Chautauqua Lake and Lake Erie.

7. One superpower you would want?
   To fly. Like a real hawk.

8. Which of the Seven Dwarfs is most like you?
   Doc … because he’s different.

9. What is your favorite pizza topping?
   Slimy worms.

10. Which mascot would you team up with in a three-legged race? RoodyRoo from Canton. I imagine we’ll hop – or fly – our way to victory.

Columbia Greene Community College – RIP Van Winkle

1. What is your name?
   RIP Van Winkle

2. What school are you from?
   Columbia-Greene Community College

3. Favorite place to hang out in your campus?
   The trail behind the softball field that goes up toOlana. One of my favorite views of the Hudson Valley.

4. One fact about your school/campus that most people don’t know?
   The original architect, EdgarTafel, was a renowned disciple of Frank Lloyd Wright.

5. Favorite on-campus eatery?
   The Rip Café, snacking on “Rip Chips.”

6. Cool thing to do in the surrounding area?
   Hike, bowl, sleep, fish, hunt.

7. One superpower you would want?
   Time Travel…That’s a super power right?

8. Which of the Seven Dwarfs is most like you?
   Sleepy, duh!

9. What is your favorite pizza topping?
   Squirrel!

10. Which mascot would you team up with in a three-legged race?
    Damien the Great Dane. I love dogs.

   Calvin

   Clinton Community College

3. Favorite place to hang out in your campus?
   The Cougar’s Den

4. One fact about your school/campus that most people don’t know?
   Babe Ruth stayed here while it was a hotel and President McKinley stayed here during the summer and called it his summer White House.

5. Favorite on-campus eatery?
   Cougar’s Den

6. Cool thing to do in the surrounding area?
   Jet skiing on Lake Champlain

7. One superpower you would want?
   Babe Ruth stayed here while it was a hotel and President McKinley stayed here during the summer and called it his summer White House

8. Which of the Seven Dwarfs is most like you?
   Happy because our Cougar brings smiles to everyone

9. What is your favorite pizza topping?
   Meatlovers because I’m a Carnivore.  Nom nom nom

10. Which mascot would you team up with in a three-legged race?
    Burghy from Plattsburgh State because community is our middle name.
