The way we make any system better is through collaboration. No one knows this better than Chancellor Nancy Zimpher. To share this knowledge, Chancellor Zimpher spent June 1st at the Higher Ed Leaders Forum in New York City where she was invited to share SUNY’s strengths and the lessons she has learned along the way. This forum brought together the nation’s presidents, chancellors, and provosts to discuss the issues facing higher education across the country.
This annual event gives leaders in higher education the opportunity to gather together and have real peer-to-peer discussions about what they do well and what they need help with. It is also a chance for them all to find out what other colleges are doing well and how they face the challenges of our time, such as social, political, or managerial issues on campus.
Chancellor Zimpher spoke at this event with Janet Napolitano, President of the University of California system on a panel titled “A Leadership Challenge Like No Other.” Together, these two ladies oversee 74 campuses with more than one million students between them. This, along with their histories, gives them a lot of perspective on leadership. They spoke about the challenges of running two of the most powerful systems in the nation, including how they got to where they are and what their own influences are.
