Students at SUNY Westchester Community College took part in activities to promote food independence. It is estimated that 200,000 Westchester County residents — about 1 in 5 in the population — are hungry or at risk of hunger. Half of them seek emergency food regularly. The other half seek it sporadically.
Partnered with The Food Bank for Westchester, an agency who provides emergency food for an estimated 81,400 people annually, SUNY Westchester Community College participated in the UnHunger Games. Monday, November 13th was the beginning of the week-long student challenge. Sponsored by the Department of Student Involvement and developed in consultation with Volunteer New York, Westchester Community College pledged to fill bags of food to donate to food pantries on campus pantry and in Westchester County.
Nine Westchester Community College student clubs worked successfully to fill “FILL ME” bags for hunger with nutritious food items designated by Volunteer New York. Approximately 80 students participated in the challenge. The club with the most points received lunch paid for by the SUNY Westchester Community College Student Involvement Club.
