Earlier this week, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced more than $755 million in economic and community funding that was awarded through Round VII of the Regional Economic Development Council initiative. The Regional Councils were established in 2011 to help jumpstart the economy and create jobs and to foster community-based and performance-driven economic development. This initiative empowers academic leaders, among other groups, to create strategic plans tailored to their region’s strengths and resources to help create jobs, improve quality of life, and spur economic development.
Below is a recap of the awards, by economic region, that are bringing investment dollars to SUNY. Congratulations to the following SUNY colleges and universities receiving 2017 REDC awards:
Capital Region
Hudson Valley Community College
Hudson Valley Community College will construct labs and classrooms and purchase machinery and equipment to create the Advanced Manufacturing Technology facility, a one-stop manufacturing technology center that will train students on the latest machine tools, equipment, tooling, and software for employment with manufacturers in the Capital Region.

Schenectady County Community College
Schenectady Community Action Program (SCAP)’s Employment Services Project will provide unemployed or underemployed workers with advanced healthcare skills training that incorporates career pathway and employability skills development, as well as job placement and retention support.

SUNY System
The Pike Companies will acquire land and construct and equip a building to establish MTEC, a public-private partnership between GlobalFoundries, SUNY, and other institutions and businesses that will provide training for 21st-century manufacturing careers.

Central New York
SUNY Cortland
The city will develop a safe pedestrian and bicycle arterial corridor along Clinton Avenue and River Street between SUNY Cortland and Yaman Park. Work will include complete reconstruction of a one-mile section of Clinton Avenue including new dual bike lanes, new sidewalks, vegetated medians, LED lighting, new pavement, and landscaping.

Morrisville State College
Morrisville State College will build a Four Seasons College Farm on their campus. The farm will be built by expanding and renovating the existing controlled environmental agriculture facility. This project will assist the school in combining their Controlled Environment Agriculture, Aquaculture, Dairy, Ag Science, and Livestock programs. The project includes the expansion and renovation of existing facilities, a larger controlled environment agriculture greenhouse, processing and storage facilities, classroom structure, and commercial space for entrepreneurial activities.

Onondaga Community College
Onondaga Community College will deliver employer-validated, competency-based, short-term occupational programs to unemployed workers to enable them to prepare for Medical Billing, Nursing Assistant, and Patient Advocate jobs in the healthcare industry, as well as positions as warehouse workers in the transportation and warehousing, manufacturing, wholesale, and other industries.

Finger Lakes
College at Brockport
This project proposes to construct a new multi-use trail along the south side of the Erie Canal from Commissary Park on the campus of the State University of New York College at Brockport. Along with this trail creating a more attractive, pedestrian-friendly connection between the College, the Village of Brockport, and the Town of Sweden, this trail would be accessible to people with mobility impairments and the overall project offers new avenues for student/faculty to engage more deeply with the surrounding community.

Finger Lakes Community College Existing Employee Healthcare Training Program will provide eligible, current Rochester Regional Healthcare system nursing assistants with skills training to become licensed, practical nurses.

Nassau Community College’s URGENT Program, which stands for Utility Readiness for Gaining Employment for Non-Traditionals, will provide classroom instruction and workshops to unemployed/underemployed individuals seeking entry-level, field positions in the utility industry

Stony Brook University
Stony Brook University will provide training for participants to receive the Project Management Certificate with Agile. The certificate is a training program tied to a globally recognized credential: Project Management Institute (PMI) Project Management Professional (PMP) or Certified Associate Project Manager (CAPM). The certificate also includes training on the Agile Project Management, a globally recognized methodology increasingly in demand.

Stony Brook University in collaboration with a leading Chinese silicon carbide manufacturer will create a new center to research wide band semiconductors used in power electronics.

Mohawk Valley Community College will operate a six-week training program to train individuals as Commercial Truck Drivers.

Jefferson Community College’s North Country Retail Training program will provide participants with an intensive and full-supported training program to include the following program components: Retail Fundamentals, Customer Service and Sales, and Advanced Customer Service and Sales

Southern Tier
Binghamton University
The project includes the demolition, remediation, and rough grading of critical sites in close proximity to the new Binghamton University Johnson City Campus. Aged structures at these sites must be demolished and remediated to ensure the safety and security of the faculty, staff, students, and community members who will live and work at or near the campus.

SUNY Broome
Broome County will work with the Spiedie Fest Balloon Rally Inc. to develop a new marketing plan that specifically targets visitors who live outside of New York State, including new targeted advertising and promotions, as well as print materials to increase awareness of the event. Additionally, the project will include an updated Spiedie Fest Music Concert Series, and a free bus shuttle from nearby SUNY Broome.

Western NY
University at Buffalo
University at Buffalo (UB) Center for Computational Research (CCR) will expand its high-performance computing (HPC) resource to provide Western New York companies across industry sectors with access to advanced computing equipment that will foster innovation, reduce time to market, and improve processes, with an emphasis on emerging technologies for data analytics.

The project will be a joint effort between the Town and the University at Buffalo School of Architecture and Planning to help the Town identify items for a community center. The two key focuses of this will be the location of a community center based on the community’s interest and wants. After locations have been identified, further community outreach meetings will be held to determine the programming needed and wanted for the community center.

Erie Community College
Erie Community College (ECC) will train underemployed workers to work in the growing hospitality industry of brewing science. This Brewing Science and Service certificate program will provide trainees with the credentials and experience to earn employment in the hospitality industry, as well as with breweries, beer distributors, sales teams, grocery stores, and beverage centers.
