Architecture and construction students at SUNY Delhi are working with Otsego County, NY to design and construct several tiny homes which will be used as temporary housing for the homeless. The 242 square-foot homes will be used by the Department of Social Services as a temporary housing location for single men to stay for approximately four months as they are connected with the tools to help them get back on their feet.
The construction project is being led by Gary Brackett who teaches in the University’s School of Applied Technologies. Prior to construction, students submitted design proposals to the county, and those designs were integrated into the final design used for all the houses. Throughout fall and winter, approximately 75 students will be involved in the construction.
The final tiny neighborhood will be located behind the Meadows office complex where several county departments, including Social Services, are located. These houses will meet a high need for affordable housing while reducing the amount of money the county spends annually on temporary housing locations, such as motels.
