The Maritime College men’s lacrosse team dedicated it’s fall season to collecting new backpacks to donate to Homes for the Brave. Head Coach Dan Lawrence and the Privateers set their goal at 100 backpacks at the beginning of the fall, but they ended up easily passing that mark and finished with an astounding 690 backpacks to donate to homeless veterans.
Homes for the Brave is a non-profit organization with a mission of providing housing and services to the homeless, especially veterans. The vision of the organization is to provide a model to enable homeless men, women, and their families, especially those who served our country, to attain safe, affordable housing and a livable income so that they may return to a productive and meaningful life.
“I’m very proud of how much effort our team put into this project,” said coach Lawrence. “It was great to see the energy our team brought each and every day when it came to collecting these backpacks and for them to surpass the original goal by so much was incredible.”
Coach Lawrence and the team made the drive up to Bridgeport, CT on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, to drop off the backpacks in person at the Homes for the Brave center.
“Maritime athletics is dedicated to community service projects just like this one and I couldn’t be happier with what our men’s lacrosse team did this fall,” said Director of Athletics Kristofer Schnatz. “They set the standard for what we expect with community service and I can’t wait to see what our student-athletes will do next.”
“The support we received from other teams, professors, parents, alumni, and everybody else was fantastic,” said Coach Lawrence. “We couldn’t have done it without their tremendous support.”
