First-year students at SUNY ESF kicked off the school year by participating in Saturday of Service – a day dedicated to serving, volunteering and working hand in hand with the Syracuse community. This year, there was record participation, from both students and the community. More than 400 students pitched in to help at 14 community sites.
The students spent the day at various parks, both city and state, volunteering to clean and beautify the grounds. City parks included Elmwood, Kirk and Schiller; the state parks were Green Lakes and Clark Reservation. The program relies on collaboration among ESF staff and two ESF alumni: Syracuse City Arborist Steve Harris and New York State FORCES Program Manager Tom Hughes.
The goal of Saturday of Service is to introduce new students to a service-oriented mindset. For many ESF students, the program helps build a foundation that can grow into research, field work, a capstone project or, eventually, a career.
