Since the Fall of 2012, the SUNY Orange Newburgh Criminal Justice Club has conducted an annual used winter clothing drive from mid-October to mid-November. Drop-off boxes and pick-up times are available on both campuses. Winter items requested include jackets, sweaters, sweatshirts, snow pants, boots, gloves, hats, and scarves. In addition to collecting and sorting these items, students re-purpose and decorate the boxes each year. Student club members (with the assistance of club advisers Joanne Penzato from Counseling and Advising and Timothy Zeszutek, an instructor with the Criminal Justice Department) empty the boxes regularly and then sort the items prior to them being distributed to local organizations that help disseminate to our local off campus community. Hundreds of items have been shared to groups in the past including churches and foster care services throughout the Orange and Ulster County area. The drive is a great opportunity for the students to actively engage in campus activities outside the classroom and also work together in supporting community efforts.
Initiated in the Fall of 2009 as one of the first Newburgh Campus Student Clubs, the Newburgh Criminal Justice Club is a very active student club with both on and off campus activities. In addition to the annual clothing drive, the club also participates in college’s Adopt-A-Family campaign.
