With more than 290 undergraduate programs in visual and performing arts, SUNY campuses are bursting with creativity and talent. Some students decide to major in New Media, like the innovative students at SUNY Purchase, and go on to become film producers and web content managers. Others enter Photography programs, like the artistic students at Mohawk Valley Community College, where they often graduate to take on jobs as press photographers and television camera operators. To highlight this range of talent, a showcase of students and their photography from across the system is being put together for output on SUNY’s Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts.
Here at SUNY, in an effort to increase the profile of our talented students, and our Instagram account, we’re seeking student photographers to showcase their works. Throughout the summer and upcoming academic year, we will be selecting students on a regular basis to have their photographs promoted to the 80,000+ followers across SUNY’s social media platforms. Alongside the photographs will be the student’s name, school, and preferred contact information to co-promote their own social media work.
We’re looking to showcase student talent in three categories:
- Portrait – Showcase a portrait or candid photograph of students, faculty, staff and administrators who have had great impact on the campus community at your SUNY college. Along with the photograph, provide the name and a short biography of this campus leader with a description of why you chose them.
- Campus Celebration or Event – Showcase a photograph of an on-campus event that highlights the vibrance of the campus community at your SUNY college. Along with the photograph, provide the name and a short description of the event.
- Landscape – Showcase a photograph of your favorite spot on campus to study, relax, have lunch, or meet up with friends. There are many notable spots on our SUNY campuses that distinguish them from each other in unique ways.
The creative talent of our students is something all can be proud of. Throughout New York State, these works are often on display for the public to see. Currently, SUNY System Administration, the SUNY Global Center in NYC, and the Rockefeller Institute of Government have student galleries on display for all to see during events and visits.Recently, Chancellor Johnson announced the Best of SUNY Art Awardees, who have all their work on display until the end of the year, at SUNY System Plaza Hall in Albany.
With all that is underway to showcase the creative talents of SUNY students, we can now take these efforts and do more with an online showcase of our student talent.
Because remember, as noted photographer Ansel Adams once stated, “There are no rules for good photographs, there are only good photographs.”
