An increased love of reading and writing is certainly worthy of celebration- particularly when such love is instilled in youth. That is the goal of the University at Albany‘s Literacy Lab, a capstone practicum for students pursuing the special education and literacy master’s degree for educating children from birth through Grade 6.
Students from the School of Education spent six weeks over the summer working with children from the Cohoes City School on reading and writing through the Literacy Lab. The project brought together 22 students pursuing the literacy specialist master’s degree with 22 elementary students for one-on-one intensives that culminated in a public writing that the young writers did for family and friends.
Cliff Bird, principal of Abram Lansing Elementary School, said “The UAlbany Literacy Lab adds to our resources by providing a one-to-one literacy professional who not only becomes familiar with the student but, by design, engages with the child’s family as well. Our children are raised up and our community benefits as well.”
Across SUNY, students, faculty and administration alike are coming together to in the spirit of charity and togetherness. 30 Days of Giving is our annual tradition, which starts on Thanksgiving every year, where we reflect on efforts of the past year and highlight some of the selfless acts of that members of the SUNY community are leading.
