Throughout the holiday season, Herkimer County Community College has been raffling off hand-knitted hats to raise funds for students in need. All proceeds from the raffle go directly to the student emergency fund to help students who find themselves in need of some extra cash to cover unexpected expenses. Examples of situations in which this fund can help students include: car repairs due to an accident, travel due to a loved one’s death or sickness, and loss of a laptop or mobile device.
The hats have been donated by College President Cathleen McColgin who has been knitting hats and other items, along with a group of friends, for students in need for the past couple years. This year, she went a step further, and decided to raffle her hats off in an effort to raise funds for the student emergency fund. As an extra incentive, when Professor April Harris heard about the raffle, she jumped on board and donated coaster sets that she sells through her small gift shop business.
The raffle has been taking place weekly since mid-November, and will conclude before the Christmas holiday. The goal is to raise a total of $1,000 through the raffle. With four drawings held to date, $800 has been raised! Winners have been excited to select a hat and a coaster set—and while they make beautiful gifts, we think they may be hard to part with!
This is just one of the creative ways the Herkimer College community is supporting our students… and having some fun doing so, too!
