Creativity and competition can play a big part in the fight against food insecurity. Students in Farmingdale State College‘s Architecture and Construction Technology (ACT) Club brought their creativity to the Long Island Canstruction 2023 competition.
With support and funding from alumni and friends of the college, students put more than 2,000 cans together to form a structure of the popular cartoon character Bob the Builder in an effort to show how they can help fix hunger.
Each layer in the FSC Bob the Builder CanArt® structure provides a food group to create new and interesting recipes. There is a mix of protein, fruits, vegetables, and spices that, when combined in various ways with a few more simple ingredients, can form a wide variety of healthy meals.
At the end of the competition, the public was allowed to vote for their favorite builds before all of the cans of food were donated to regional food banks.
“This was a phenomenal event that brought teamwork and like-minded individuals to plan, design and create a structure, while simultaneously creating a message towards hunger and community inclusion,” said Jonathan Reyes, architectural engineering technology student.
