For those who face difficulties getting into and completing college, admission can be just the first hurdle. However, schools like SUNY Ulster County Community College have many different support programs to help students succeed in becoming college graduates.
One of these programs is New Start, a SUNY Ulster program that awards those living under the poverty line in Ulster County a full-tuition scholarship (as well as other support services through local partnerships) to attain a General Management certificate.
During summer 2023 two interns from the Ulster County Climate Corps, a paid summer internship program initiated by County Executive Jen Metzger, curated custom Career-Care packages for SUNY Ulster New Start students. Each Career-Care package contained a workforce wardrobe and life outfits in their sizes, including accessories, shoes, and personal care items all upcycled from the college’s boutique.
These care packages were extended to local organizations such as Washbourne House, Family of New Paltz, and People’s Place to serve even more community members.
In total, the Career Care packages provided students with the additional supports they needed to make their college experience whole.
