In 2024, SUNY introduced its inaugural Empire State Service Corps, providing students with the chance to participate in paid public service across New York State. Modeled after well-known programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps, this initiative will offer 500 positions for SUNY students across 64 campuses, enabling them to engage in impactful work while gaining valuable hands-on experiences.

Students can choose from a variety of focus areas, either on their campus or within their local communities. The program features several key roles in 7 areas:
- K-12 Tutoring Corps: Support students in primary and secondary education.
- SNAP and Basic Needs Outreach Corps: Assist individuals in accessing essential services.
- Peer Mental Health Corps: Promote mental health awareness and provide support among peers.
- Sustainability Corps: Contribute to environmental conservation and sustainability efforts.
- Anti-Hate and Bias Prevention Corps: Engage in initiatives to reduce hate and bias in communities.
- Civic Engagement Corps: Facilitate and encourage active participation in civic life.
- FAFSA Completion Corps: Help students complete their financial aid applications.

Placement and Transportation
When you apply to the service corps, you can choose a preferred placement site. Some placement sites are on a SUNY campus but many are throughout the community. Student who have to stay on campus or off site can indicate such on the application; otherwise, students who don’t have restrictions have the option to do either. Transportation support may be supported for off-site community locations.
