This week, SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher, along with 19 other nationally recognized education, community, and business leaders, was named to a new education commission by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo.
The New NY Education Reform Commission was formed to provide counsel and guidance to the Governor on important issues concerning education in New York state including: the current structure of the state’s education system including teacher recruitment and performance, student achievement, education funding and costs, parent and family engagement, problems facing high-need districts, and the best use of technology in the classroom. The Commission will also analyze the organization of school districts to ensure they are structured to meet the needs of New York’s students while also respecting the taxpayer.
Of her appointment to the Commission, Chancellor Zimpher said “I am honored to have been asked by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to serve as a member of the New NY Education Reform Commission. There is no doubt in my mind that New York has the capacity to lead the nation, if not the world, in ensuring a well-educated, productive citizenry with skills for the 21st century knowledge economy.
“New York’s education system must be seen as a continuum, where every individual and organization with a stake in the success of students is committed to working together to ensure achievement at home, in school, and in the workforce. SUNY brings a unique perspective to this task – we train the teachers who teach the students who come to our campuses to learn, ready or not. Only together can we provide every child with an opportunity for success, from cradle to career.
“Our state’s commitment to education is clear – we spend more per pupil than anyone else. The reality, however, is that the results don’t show it. By uniting higher education with early childhood, K-12, government, businesses, and communities, Governor Cuomo has established a commission that is certain to make a difference for generations of New Yorkers to come.”
