The holidays remind us this is the season of giving. All members of SUNY make a concerted effort to volunteer and contribute to their respective campuses and local communities. The 30 Days of Giving campaign highlights students and faculty across all of our 64 campuses who participate in volunteerism and give back to those in need. With over 467,000 students and three million alumni, we want to celebrate the impact the SUNY community has made in all of their unique community service projects. As we learned last year, the byproduct of taking volunteerism to scale is not only building character in our students themselves as they join our over three million alumni, but also to set an example of impact as the nation’s largest university system.

Day 14
Monroe Community College
Second grade students at the World of Inquiry School in the Rochester City School District embarked on an exciting adventure with Monroe Community College Education majors enrolled in Performance and Presentation Skills for Educators.
Second graders worked for eight weeks with MCC students as they explored how items get from the farm to the market. MCC students and second graders collaborated their efforts to co-author and illustrate a class book and poster for presentation reflecting their research meeting multiple Common Core Standards.
The project culminated in a celebration of literacy and arts integration at our “Farm to Market” event. Second grade students and MCC students brought their learning to life through song and presentations of their posters for students in the school, their families, and the community.
The World of Inquiry students and MCC students became true authors as their books were printed and donated to local child care centers and community organizations.
MCC would like to thank Mrs. Burke, Mrs. Eckler, and Mrs. Sookram for sharing your students with MCC students. Thank you also to many others who were a part of this project for promoting literacy and diversity in the lives of children in our community and supporting the growth of future teachers.
