On Wednesday, dozens of research leaders from around the world will convene at the SUNY Global Center in New York City to discuss emerging trends in scientific advancement–namely, undergraduate students’ persistence in STEM disciplines and worldwide research collaboration, which are both highly impacted by 21st Century technological advancements.
The meeting, beginning with Chancellor Zimpher’s introductions and Vice Chancellor and Research Foundation President, Timothy Killeen, will speak to the council’s advisory recommendations and SUNY’s responses, update the council on SUNY’s centerpiece initiatives and frame the day’s panel discussions.
There are two feature panel discussions. The first panel will discuss Persistence of Undergraduate Students in STEM led by Dr. Shirley Malcom, Head of Education and Human Resources at the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Panelists will include Candice Foley, Professor of Physical Sciences at Suffolk County Community College; Bahgat Sammakia, Vice President for Research and Distinguished Professor at Binghamton University; James Spiller, Assistant Provost for Research and Scholarship and Dean of the Graduate School at The College at Brockport; and Orlando Taylor, President Senior Fellow at the Association of American Colleges and Universities of the Chicago School of Professional Psychology.
The second panel, later Wednesday afternoon, will discuss International Research Collaboration led by Mitchell Leventhal, SUNY Vice Chancellor for Global Affairs. Panelists will include Roger Beachy, Professor at Washington University, St. Louis; Marlene Belfort, Distinguished Professor at the University at Albany; Aristides Patrinos, Deputy Director for Research at the Center for Urban Science and Progress at New York University; and Samuel Stanley, President and Professor of Medicine at Stony Brook University.

The SUNY Research Council serves as an advisory council to the SUNY Board of Trustees, the Research Foundation Board of Directors, the SUNY Provost and Campus Presidents. Its distinguished members are listed on the SUNY Research Council Website. The council considers and advises SUNY on strategies that encourage and nurture research as one of the primary missions of the university. Its work informs strategic and operational planning at both SUNY and the Research Foundation.
