The holidays remind us this is the season of giving. All members of SUNY make a concerted effort to volunteer and contribute to their respective campuses and local communities. The 30 Days of Giving campaign highlights students and faculty across all of our 64 campuses who participate in volunteerism and give back to those in need. With over 467,000 students and three million alumni, we want to celebrate the impact the SUNY community has made in all of their unique community service projects. As we learned last year, the byproduct of taking volunteerism to scale is not only building character in our students themselves as they join our over three million alumni, but also to set an example of impact as the nation’s largest university system.

Jefferson Community College
Donation of Mittens and Gloves
The Jefferson Community College Women’s Organization (JCCWO) collected 80 pairs of gloves and mittens of various sizes during its Warm Hands…Warm Hearts fundraiser. In December, the donation was given to the Watertown Urban Mission, an organization comprised of churches, businesses and individuals who help community members in need.
Dollar Dinner
A team effort by the Jefferson Community College campus community and Watertown Urban Mission made a Dollar Dinner held on campus in November a big success. Volunteers served 357 spaghetti dinners and desserts contributed by JCC faculty and staff.
Book Drive
Jefferson Community College (JCC) faculty, staff and students collected 342 children’s and young adult books for the annual Literacy of Northern New York book drive. The books will be distributed to North Country children through the Salvation Army’s Christmas Give Away Program. Over 6,500 books have been donated during the thirteen years that JCC has been involved in the Literacy of Northern New York book drive. The Melvil Dewey Library and JCC’s human services club co-sponsored the event.
Angel Tree
Jefferson Community College (JCC) angel tree coordinator and sociology professor, Rebecca S. Riehm, collected more than 50 gifts for the Salvation Army to distribute to area children. The angel tree, housed in the lobby of the Melvil Dewey Library, was adorned with tags containing holiday wishes of North Country children ages ranging from birth to 16. JCC faculty, staff and students had the opportunity to take a tag and supply a gift corresponding to the information provided. JCC’s campus community has sponsored an annual angel tree since 1990.
Holiday Community Service
In December, members of the JCC baseball team served hors d’oeuvres and beverages at the Ladies Night Out Shopping for a Cause event held at the RiverEdge Resort in Alexandria Bay. Non-perishable food items and toiletries collected at the door were donated to local food pantries.
