2013 Year in Review: List of the Rankings

As 2013 nears completion, we all like to look back at news and events from the year that had impact and recognition. SUNY schools found their way to a number of ranking lists this year from sources like the Princeton Review to Forbes and more, with categories ranging from best value public colleges to military-friendly campuses. The common thread through all of these is the way SUNY positions itself to lead in affordability, access, and quality for all students. Revisit some of these lists below.

Rankings Round Up

• 23 SUNY campuses were ranked among the top colleges and universities in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. Top spots include 11 campuses named “Top Public Regional Universities” in the North; nine in top 100 “Best Regional Universities” in the North; and recognition of SUNY students graduating with some of the least debt in the country.
• 36 SUNY colleges and universities were recognized as “military friendly” by top-rated national military publication, G.I. Jobs Magazine, for 2014.
• Six campuses were ranked among “America’s Top Colleges” by Forbes: Binghamton University, Stony Brook University, SUNY Geneseo, University at Buffalo, SUNY ESF, and University at Albany.
• The Princeton Review’s Guide to Green Colleges, which recognizes a commitment to the environment and to sustainability, was issued in April and included UAlbany, Binghamton, Geneseo, New Paltz, Oneonta, Potsdam, and Stony Brook.
• The Online College Database created a list of the Top 50 Colleges Committed to Saving the Planet. SUNY System is number six on the list, keeping company with MIT, Harvard, and Yale, in the Top 10. SUNY Canton is the only individual SUNY campus to make the list, at number 26.
• More than a dozen SUNY campuses were named among the top in the nation for return on investment (ROI), according to PayScale’s 2013 College Return on Investment (ROI) Report. SUNY Maritime College ranks fifth overall and both Maritime College and Stony Brook University have projected returns on investment of over a million dollars.
• New York State ranks first in the Northeast region and second in the nation in attracting international students in higher education, according to the Open Doors Report for 2013.
• 13 SUNY campuses were named to the 2013 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. SUNY Cortland and SUNY Oswego were named to the Honor Roll with distinction, while the following campuses were also recognized: UAlbany, Alfred State College, Binghamton University, SUNY Cobleskill, SUNY Delhi, SUNY Geneseo, SUNY ESF, SUNY Fredonia, Monroe Community College, SUNY Old Westbury, and Stony Brook University.
• The Princeton Review’s 2013 list of Best Value in Public Colleges included Binghamton University, University at Buffalo, SUNY ESF, SUNY Geneseo, SUNY Purchase, and Stony Brook University. Binghamton cracked the Top 10, listed 8th in the nation.
• Kiplinger’s 2013 list of Best Values in Public Colleges included in its Top 100: Binghamton University (15), SUNY Geneseo (20), Stony Brook University (29), SUNY New Paltz (49), University at Buffalo (51), SUNY Oneonta (74), SUNY Purchase (89), SUNY Fredonia (97), and SUNY Plattsburgh (98).
• Washington Monthly’s inaugural “Best Bang for Your Buck” list included Plattsburgh (30), Brockport (35), Oneonta (51), New Paltz (63), Albany (64), Binghamton (86), UB (73), Fredonia (76), Geneseo (84), and Cortland (97) in the top 100 nationally.
