SUNY Oswego‘s Adopt-A-Grandparent program was recently recognized as the “Community Champion” for the month of November by Recognize Oswego County. The student-run volunteer program has been in existence for well over 20 years. For the Fall 2014 semester, Adopt-A-Grandparent has 75 student volunteers who will have completed over 1,000 hours of community service by the end of the semester with elderly in Oswego County. They do weekly activities including Bingo, arts and crafts, cards, adapted sports, and more at the following residential communities:
- St. Luke Health Services,
- St. Francis Commons,
- Bishop Commons,
- Oswego Ladies Home,
- Morningstar,
- Manor at Seneca Hill, and
- Meadowbrook Manor.
The students and elderly look forward to their weekly activities, and both populations benefit greatly from the experience!
