Welcome to the 3rd Annual Mascot Madness competition! The event we have all been waiting for has finally arrived. This is the chance for YOU, the students, alumni, and fans to decide who SUNY’s favorite campus mascot is! We have a total of 40 mascots from across New York State in the running to win the coveted title. They have each been randomly placed into 4 SUNY regions and ranked by the number of athletic teams each mascot represents, which will determine which mascots are competing against each other in each round.
SUNY has more than 85 NCAA Division I, 290 NCAA Division III, and 385 NJCAA athletics teams, as well as hundreds of non-competitive athletics clubs. Our mascots work so hard cheering on every SUNY student athlete, so why not cheer them on?
Last year’s competition brought out thousands of voters in support of their favorite mascot. In addition to voting, there were over 16,000 tweets with @SUNY #MascotMadness, and 19,000 “likes” on Facebook. What will be the results from this year’s competition? Only you can decide.
But before you do, make sure to check out the interviews below with each of the Mascots so you can get to know them a little better.
* Voting for the 2015 Mascot Madness tournament will be conducted with additional verification this year. Each voter will need to supply an email address with which they will be sent a confirmation email to submit their votes. This will allow the voting to be reviewed for consistency in a much more direct way. All votes will be limited to one per 24 hours, after which a user can resubmit a new vote in the same game again. At the end of each round, a an email will be selected as a winner of a prize from their school as thanks for participation. Email addresses will not be used for marketing or addition to any mailing lists and will be deleted at the conclusion of the tournament.

The idea to add the additional step of confirming the vote was probably thought to be a good idea to improve integrity, but I believe that it will only take away from the competition and point of this contest. I saw this contest as a way to ask college students to quickly vote for their school in order to increase school spirit across school campuses and visibility for the conferences involved. This extra step is asking a lot of busy college students. It will discourage many students as complexity is never a good thing and finding an additional email from “pollDaddy” is an additional step that will deter many students. I wish this wasn’t the case, but asking people to vote and increasing school spirit is no longer just simply pushing a button to vote on their smart phone and feeling instant gratification and pride in their school, instead it has gotten complex enough to deter atleast some students and I predict it will take away from the contest.
Additionally, the brackets are being read completely wrong. They were created showing play-in games for some teams or byes for the higher seeded teams. Instead, they just got all lumped in together and now 3 teams are competing against each other.. that isn’t how a bracket works!
Don’t mean to sound negative, I absolutely love this contest and want to give feedback so that it can turn itself around and get better!!
