Are you prepared to make the jump from college to the real world? One SUNY student is spending this summer developing a program to make the transition smoother.
Elizabeth Skovron, an incoming senior at the University at Albany, created her own internship to turn current students and recent grads into business professionals.
The idea is to connect her peers with business owners and corporate professionals through networking events and mentoring workshops. Under the guidance of Greenburgh, N.Y. Town Supervisor Paul Feiner, Skovron hopes to offer valuable post-grad resources to students within the Westchester Community.
“This initiative gives students — myself included –an opportunity to build connections and learn from real businesses. Many students are fearful of transitioning after college. I hope to offer a glimpse into how the professional-world operates and what it takes to be successful.”
Skovron has already garnered support. She held her first public meeting at Greenburgh Town Hall in early June. She’s been featured in the Westchester Business Journal, on WCBS 880, and through Greenburgh Access Television (GATV).

One specific route Skovron wants to shed light on is entrepreneurship, believing students need to keep an open-mind to starting a business. She’s in the process of booking a number of local entrepreneurs to offer insight.
“I think many students have this perception that if you want to start your own company, you need to have millions of dollars. That is simply not true,” Skovron said. “You can take your idea to the next level with the right attitude. I really enjoy the idea of taking a company off the ground, from researching to seeking out to the right people, and everything in between.”
Skovron has reached out to a number of local schools to help spread the word, including Purchase College SUNY, Fordham University, Iona College and Westchester Community College. Interested students are encourage to reach out to the Town of Greenburgh for more information.
