It is said that reading aloud to a child is one of the most important things a parent or caregiver can do to prepare them for reading and learning. As education is a lifelong process, beginning at birth and carried out through school, college, career and even retirement, SUNY supports these Cradle to Career initiatives to prepare our children and adults with the ability to deliver social and economic impact well into the future.
In 2013, SUNY launched a partnership with Read Aloud 15 Minutes, a national organization that focuses on parent involvement with young children (up to 2nd grade) in an effort to increase the time children spend reading. In partnering with Read Aloud, SUNY campuses throughout New York began reaching out to community groups, early childhood education providers, and schools to encourage them to join the movement. Childcare centers, disciplinary student groups and entire campuses have signed on as partners to spread the word, hold book drives and host events to promote this topic.
During the summer months, Read Aloud focuses on the Seize the Summer campaign in an effort to build off of the knowledge children have obtained in school through the academic year. The time spent reading daily can help a child make gains in knowledge, stimulate imaginations and build enthusiasm for learning by reading and reading aloud.
Find more information about SUNY’s participation in Read Aloud 15 Minutes at their website. Every bit of growth in the program will inspire more parents to read aloud for 15 minutes every day starting at birth, and we will see far more children prepared by kindergarten for a lifetime of learning success.
