Last week, the frigid streets of New York City were energized and bustling just a little bit more then they usually are. That’s because the much anticipated Mercedes Benz Fashion Week for the Fall/Winter 2015 season was taking place. Beginning on February 12th and running through the 19th, all sorts of people from the world of fashion descended on the city to take part in the Fashion Week Frenzy. Celebrities, models, bloggers, socialites, fashion journalists and more came to see what the designers had in store. One of our very own, Fashion Institute of Technology alum Francisco Costa, was among the designers for this year’s fashion week as the head designer of the Calvin Klein (who is also a FIT alumnus!) collection for women.
Now that NYFW is done, we can look back at some of the biggest trends that appeared on the runway for the Fall/Winter season. Some of these may even come in handy for students as they prepare for job/internship interviews, networking events, and social gatherings around campus and aim to make a strong first impression.
- 70’s chic – It seems like many designers have taken inspiration from this decades past, bringing updated twists of 70’s style. These included flare jeans, leather miniskirts, and long chiffon maxi dresses.
- Turtlenecks – Of course this is something many of us wear once the temperature starts to drop, but for the new Fall/Winter season it has been introduced in a new way: layering it under a sleeveless dress.
- Fringe – This decorative element can be incorporated in so many different ways that I’m sure you’ll have no problem finding a way to incorporate it into your wardrobe. On the runway we saw fringes on boots, dresses, scarves, and even clutches.
- Colors – Pink and orange were in heavy display this week. While not usually a color choice for the colder months–a pop of pink or vibrant orange will definitely help you stand out among the darker hues of Fall and Winter.
- Embellished/Sparkles – Intricate detailing with jewels, studs, and sequins will add a dazzling element of sparkle to your ensemble especially if it’s on a dress or a skirt.
- Fur – We know it’s been extremely cold this winter so far. Coming in an assortment of vibrant colors, fur coats, vests, and stoles were shown as a way to give you a luxurious touch while keeping you warm!
Hopefully you can find your own inspiration from these new trends and work some cool new items into your closet for the Fall/Winter season.
