Halloween is nearly upon us and if you’re at all like me, you’ve still got plenty to do! Parties, corn mazes, haunted houses, and more. Don’t miss the festivities! Get prepared, deck out your apartment and dress yourself with quick and easy ideas for the hurried Halloween.
Great Halloween Decorations for Your First Apartment!
Whether you’re moving off-campus or out of your parents house for the first time moving into your first apartment can be an exciting and scary time. And in the spirit of all the excitement and fear, this may be the perfect holiday for which to decorate! Besides, decorating how you want is half the fun of having your own place! But since you might be new to this, we’ve got a few ideas to get you started.
Start with the basics. It doesn’t get much easier than bloody towels. Some old towels, a little fake blood, some finger painting and voilà! It certainly puts the whole space in a most festive mood! This can be done in the bathroom as well as the kitchen.
Decorative Lamp Shades
For this all you need is right here! Just cut out an image of a bug or some other creepy creature and tape it on the inside of a lampshade! The effect is creepy and fun! Maybe you’ll scare your friends, or maybe you’ll even forget you did that and scare yourself some nights.
Last-minute Costumes for Busy (or Lazy) College Students
Okay, so you were a little busy this year. Maybe classes or your internship kept you occupied. Maybe you were too busy decoration your new apartment! Or maybe you just procrastinated. Either way, you don’t have much time left but you still want a cool, original costume to wear for Halloween. That sheet-ghost thing is way over played. Besides, last year your roommate was furious when you cut holes in their sheets! Well, don’t you worry! I’ve got you covered. I collected a few quick and easy ideas to dress you up for the festivities. And to prove that these costumes are cheap and easy, I made a few!
Name Tag Costumes-
This costume is great because you can spice it up however you want!
Required items: Adhesive name tags (Alternatively, tape you can write on and are willing to decorate), something to write with.
Method: Okay, the joke here is simple. Write something funny on the name tag. If you’re tag says, “Hello my name is” you fill in the blank. Maybe your name is “Nunya Bizness.” It’s a name with some fun. Every time someone asks what you’re dressed as you can tell them off with a pun! Or maybe your tag reads “Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya.” If you name tag says, “Call me…” You could write in “Maybe” or “Ishmael.” Although maybe the Moby Dick reference will only go over well with the English majors…
Life-
I found this costume on Thinking Closet. It’s simple, funny, and easy to make. In fact, the entire production of this costume took less than 5 minutes.
Required items: Something to write “life” on. Some lemons.
Method: Write life on a shirt, or a sign you’re going to wear around your neck. Hand out lemons to people and hope that they use them to make lemonade. And maybe also hope no one mistakes you for that boring board game.
Death-
This is a fun one because it can be dressed to suit your tastes!
Required items: a bucket (optional: black clothes, makeup)
Method: Mostly this method just depends on what you imagine a personified Death, or Grim Reaper, looks like. Maybe your Death wears all black and paints their face like a skeleton, or maybe it wears cargo shorts and polo shirts. Personally I’m a fan of the skeletal look. The key is to carry around the bucket and let people know when it’s their time to kick it.
Shapeshifter-
This is a costume for the truly lazy, or the people who don’t like dressing up, but also don’t like being harassed for it.
Required items: ???
Method: It literally doesn’t matter what you wear. The thing about shapeshifters is that they can take any form. Just tell people you’re Mystique (or Tonks if you’re more of a Harry Potter fan) and you’ve decided to look like “insert your name here” today. Sure, some people dress as Mystique by panting themselves all blue, but this saves on time and paint.
**Plot twist** I’m actually a shapeshifter. Here you can see me posing as recent Brockport alum Emily Cronin.
Bonus- Duo costume
The Devil and Devil’s Advocate
Okay, so this one might require a little more time and planning than the others, but it’s fun and both costumes can easily work for any gender. Besides, if you’re a law student you may already have everything it takes to lawyer-up. All it takes is some devil horns and red clothes for one person, and your best lawyer look for the other.
