Biology professor Mkajuma Mbogho, coordinated efforts with the SUNY Ulster Biology and Business Clubs to gather and ship much needed books to her hometown of Taita, Kenya. Biology Club members helped pack up 46,000 pounds of boxes to be shipped. With the help of the Rotary Club of Kingston, N.Y., Mbogho’s church and shipping company, Global Transol, to cover the cost of shipping, the students collected thousands of books to fill the empty shelves of the university library in Kenya.
Professor Mbogho says the tribe she was born in- a Bantu tribe living in the Taita Hills on Kenya’s southwest border near Tanzania is small and takes care of itself. The rural village schools are very poor.
“Books are very much needed in Kenya,” remarked Professor Mbogho. “A book that is three or four years old is still a good book. It is well worth the effort. They are so grateful.”
