It’s not a secret that STEM careers are in demand in New York State. From jobs in environmental science, creating better medicines, and building the gadgets of tomorrow that help make life easier for everybody, opportunities are endless in STEM across New York. In addition to the amount of jobs needed to be filled, the amount workers earn in these jobs is higher too. According to the New York State Department of Labor, those working in these fields earn nearly 87% more than the average of for all workers in the state.
If you’re one of the many who is thinking of a future career in STEM, a new partnership between the University at Albany and SUNY Adirondack may have created the path you need to make it happen.
These two SUNY institutions recently signed an agreement that will grant students dual admission in science, technology, engineering, and math programs.
Seamless path to success
Interested students can enroll at SUNY Adirondack while pursuing an associate’s degree. Upon completion, they will be given credit for meeting SUNY’s general education requirements, and seamlessly transfer to earn their bachelor’s degree at UAlbany.
The best part? There’s only one official requirement. Students must maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher while at SUNY Adirondack.
The transfer program will be available to students who are studying liberal arts, mathematics, or science at SUNY Adirondack. They will continue at UAlbany in atmospheric science, biological science, chemistry, forensic chemistry, mathematics and physics. Students who earn an associate’s degree in computer science will also be able to transfer directly into the same discipline at UAlbany.

“There is a common thread among employers seeking skilled workers in the U.S.: a need for college graduates with an educational background in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics,” said University at Albany Provost James Stellar. “Through this program, SUNY Adirondack and UAlbany will help provide students better pathways to start their careers in high-demand fields and meet the growing demand for STEM workers around the world.”
The partnership will officially begin during the 2017 fall semester. Interested students are encouraged to visit SUNY Adirondack’s admissions website for additional information.
Adding to the Power of SUNY
Each year, more than 30,000 students transfer from one State University of New York (SUNY) campus to another. SUNY Adirondack and Albany’s agreement will add to SUNY’s Transfer Paths program, which guarantees transfer of its 30 general education requirements as well as discipline-specific courses in the major, resulting in true junior status for students who complete two years of study.
There were 52 SUNY Transfer Paths in place for the start of the 2015-16 academic year, ranging from aerospace engineering to nursing to theater. You can learn more about SUNY Transfer Paths here.
This agreement will only strengthen the efforts of expanding completion throughout New York State and bringing job ready graduates into the workforce. Providing more paths to reach 150,000 annual degrees granted is a key step to achieving this goal.
