Taking care of our elders. It is one of the sacred rules passed down from generation to generation. But what happens when an elder of your family lives too far away for you to be able to check up on them everyday? Well, some SUNY students took it upon themselves to make sure older generations know how to take care of themselves.
The SUNY Delhi School of Nursing reached out to area senior citizens to teach them about age-appropriate exercise and nutrition and safety in the home, in addition to many other topics. This free event was hosted at the Delhi Community Housing Center Community Room with many residents attending. Delhi nursing students also provided blood pressure checks and healthy snacks free of charge.
“We feel it’s important to provide our senior community members useful health information,” said Donna Cutting, Assistant Professor, School of Nursing. “This event provided an educational opportunity to our nursing students while stressing the importance of public-health and prevention.”
The Delhi students were able to give back in a way that gave them experience outside the classroom, as well as better the Delhi community as a whole. Interacting with older generations allows us to gain insight into what the world was like before our time and allows us to hear from life experts. We are proud of the work our students are doing in giving back to their community!
