Our annual 30 Days of Giving campaign is in full force now, showcasing the generosity and civic spirit of our campuses throughout New York. The holiday season is traditionally filled with charity and philanthropic efforts, and an effort that goes far beyond New York to encourage citizens across the world to get involved in causes that they care about is here today in Giving Tuesday
Giving Tuesday is a global day dedicated to giving back to your favorite organizations and causes. Having only started five years ago, #GivingTuesday has taken off on social networks and has become a big day for awareness and activity nationwide. Since its inception in 2012, #GivingTuesday has helped numerous communities and causes to raise funds that help build, grow, and sustain efforts that help many people in many ways. Along with the financial donations that are raised on this day, much of the momentum and awareness generated is raised though our activity in the community and on social media in retweeting, posting and sharing the causes that matter to us.
This year, many schools and organizations are again partaking in Giving Tuesday as a way to gain support. Every year more and more educational institutions are joining the Giving Tuesday movement as a way to enhance their capacity for philanthropy. After all, generous donations from alumni and community help our campuses flourish by providing students with resources for tutoring, clubs and organizations, and many other campus activities to enhance the student experience and community impact.
Alumni support plays a vital role in ensuring SUNY schools continue to educate the next generation of leaders. Alumni giving is the community-building underpinning that encourages students, parents, faculty and staff to be prideful, supportive and involved in their institutions. It allows us to maintain a direct connection with the institutions that helped us start, continue, or grow our careers and personalities and help others to be afforded the same opportunities.
So now that you’ve finished with Black Friday and Cyber Monday, get into the spirit of #GivingTuesday! Remember, all donations to campus foundations are tax deductible. Many SUNY campuses shave dedicated pages on their websites set up for a Giving Tuesday campaign. You can learn about some of those below:
- University at Albany
- Alfred State
- Broome Community College
