The University at Albany has partnered with local organization The RED Bookshelf to collect and distribute gently used children’s books to kids around the region. New Student Programs asked incoming freshman and transfers to bring children’s books to donate when they started school. Student Affairs encouraged returning students to do the same.
The RED (Read Each Day) Bookshelf is a community literacy program that’s already distributed more than 20,000 books to kids. The Albany-based nonprofit has bright red bookshelves set up in doctors’ offices, in Family Court, children’s mental health centers and the District Attorney’s office among other locations. Reading is an essential part of any education and it is easy for us to take for granted the ability to buy a book.
You can help by donating books. The book collection bins near the bookstore is a campus collection site for the program, and there are white bookshelves set up at the quads for donations. All donated books are cleaned, repaired and inspected and set out on the red bookshelves so kids can take them home.
