Can you feel it? Spring is creeping into our view, and that can only mean that many annual events are creeping up again: March Madness basketball, the New York State legislature prepares a final state budget, and we lose an hour of sleep to daylight savings. Yet the biggest event of all is Mascot Madness, the competition between our SUNY Mascots to find out which one is New York’s favorite. And the 5th annual installment of this competition is only 3 weeks away!
This is the time of the year that we rally behind those who represent our many teams so well. At SUNY, there are more than 85 NCAA Division I, 290 NCAA Division III, and 385 NJCAA athletic teams, as well as hundreds of non-competitive athletics clubs for athletes of all kind. And success is reached at every level across the system.
Last year, the Stony Brook men, UAlbany women, and UBuffalo men and women all made it to the NCAA basketball tournaments. SUNY Plattsburgh women’s hockey was ranked the #1 team in the country in the US College Hockey Online poll before winning their third consecutive national championship. And Genesee Community College defeated perennial power Onondaga Community College to win the NJCAA lacrosse national championship.
Our mascots stay busy when they have so much competitive success to rally behind! But now they’re getting ready for their own competition. This year, the event will kick-off on Tuesday, March 14.
Victor E. Knight from SUNY Geneseo came out on top as the winner of Mascot Madness 2016. Who will be this year’s winner? Will it be a repeat champion, or someone new? We can’t wait to find out! Make sure to stay tuned for more news and updates, and get yourself ready to vote in #MascotMadness this March!
