Commencement is a time of reflection, celebration, and for some, a little bit of sadness as they close the door on a chapter of life. Yet, there are many reasons to celebrate the hard work of all students who are finishing their degree. Graduates should be proud of everything they have accomplished and will accomplish in the next chapter of their lives.
The road to commencement can be a long one. The “traditional” route of four years in classes and then you graduate and get a job is changing a bit. Many students now find opportunities outside the classroom that provide real world experience on the way to degree. Some students dorm while others live with their families. Other students are married. All of these different stories and paths are part of the #SUNYCompletes storybook. It’s a way to highlight the Completion Agenda, an effort from SUNY to raise the overall number of degrees granted to 150,000 per year in order to meet New York’s growing economic needs.
Within the Completion Agenda are efforts to create resources to help students be successful and complete the degree they are pursuing. From economic support, to daycare, and academic help, different campuses are innovating ways for their students to complete. In 2016, the efforts of the Completion Agenda helped students earn and SUNY grant over 96,000 degrees! With the continued work happening on campus, we can’t wait to see how much that number has climbed in 2017.
When students see the finish line before them, they are more than happy to share the tories of how they got there. Check out this video of students sharing their SUNY completion stories:
Below is a list of all SUNY Commencement events with date, time, and location so all of New York can know when these celebrations will take place. Again, congratulations to all graduates, and we look forward to following your future path to success!
