It is has now almost been two weeks since the Atlantic Coast was hit by the devastating Super Storm Sandy. However the recovery still continues, for some more than others.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Sandy was responsible for 113 fatalities and has left New York City, Staten Island, and Long Island crippled in it’s aftermath. While most of upstate New York fared pretty well off, lower New York is in crisis. There are gas shortages, power outages, loved ones lost and people have had to evacuate their homes due to the harsh conditions brought on by the beginnings of winter. Life has most definitely not returned to normal for those affected. The only hope to those within these unfortunate conditions has been brought by the streams of volunteers and organizations offering their help and support.
All New York Sports Clubs have offered up their warm showers and many businesses in the affected areas have become charging centers for people. All SUNY Campuses have even made commendable efforts. Many, such as Rockland Community College and Nassau Community College, opened their doors as shelters. Others such as SUNY Purchase helped out in the clean up.
While SUNY has been partners with the American Red Cross since 2009, they are now once again working even harder on the storm recovery.
Both organizations have set up web pages for those affiliated with SUNY to make charitable donations. SUNY will also be hosting a blood drive on November 19 at SUNY Plaza in Albany, and is working will all its campuses throughout New York to organize volunteers.
Chancellor Zimpher said, “With a campus in every community, SUNY is a natural beacon for New Yorkers during times of crisis.” As the SUNY community we all have personal connections to many affected, either direct or indirectly, so what better time to unite to further aid in the recovery.
With Thanksgiving around the corner, there is no better time to reflect on how fortunate some can be and to give back to those in need. Even the smallest donation can make a huge difference!
